THE moment we got back to the Chateau, I could feel the weight of everything pressing down on me. I excused myself without saying much and headed straight for the shower. The day had been relentless, and it felt like I'd been running on fumes for hours after the tiredness of last night.

As soon as I stepped under the water, my thoughts started to race again. The hot water wasn't as comforting as I'd hoped. My mind was spinning, faster than the spray from the showerhead. We were diving headfirst back into the treasure hunt.

It felt like no matter how far we tried to run from it, the cross, the gold—everything—was dragging us right back into the chaos. Everything was falling back into place, but in a way that felt... wrong. Messed up.

I rubbed my face, trying to clear my mind, but it was no use. The water washed over me, but it wasn't enough to drown out the noise in my head. The fortune teller's words from yesterday kept replaying in my head.

"The treasure you seek is near you...but you will have to fight for it."

The weight of her voice, the certainty in her words, it all rattled me. It made my skin crawl. What did she mean by that? Why was the cross suddenly everything? My fingers gripped the soap harder than necessary, and I tried to shake the feeling off, but it lingered.

I stepped out of the shower, drying myself quickly, and caught my reflection in the foggy mirror. The second I wiped away the steam, my reflection stared back at me—scared, confused, and tired. I knew why.
