"HOWDY."
Startled, the three of us practically jumped out of our skin. John B let out a groan that sounded part-annoyed, part-alarmed, his eyes going cartoonishly wide as he whipped around. I instinctively raised my hands into fists like I was auditioning for a role in a low-budget action film, ready to deck whoever had dared to sneak up on us.
And JJ? JJ was a whole different breed of reactionary—he had one hand raised in the air, fingers pointed like he was about to poke the poor intruder right in the eyes. Because, of course, that's the most logical self-defence move when you're caught off guard.
"Jay, are you—" I started, but before I could finish, Kie's familiar face came into view, smiling at us like she hadn't just taken ten years off our collective lives after scaring us like that.
"It's only me," she said, the corners of her mouth tugging upward in that signature Kie way—equal parts charm and exasperation.
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding and lowered my fists, but JJ was still frozen in his battle stance, his hand in mid-air like a malfunctioning action figure. "Whoa," JJ exhaled dramatically, finally letting his hand drop to his side. "I was about to stab your eyes out, Kie."
"You look scared as shit," Kie shot back with a cheeky grin, raising an eyebrow at him.
JJ scoffed, clearly trying to salvage what was left of his dignity. "I'm not scared; I'm prepared." He smoothed a hand over his hair like that would somehow erase what had just happened.
"Kie," I breathed, stepping forward and pulling her into one of my infamous bone-crushing hugs. Relief washed over me like a wave crashing against the shore. "I was worried about your parents going nuclear on you for stealing the truck." I added, my voice muffled against her shoulder.
"Hey, hey, it's fine. I handled it," she reassured, her voice light and confident. But before she could say anything else, I cupped her face in my hands and planted a quick kiss on her cheek.
"I thought I'd never see you again," I sighed, pulling her back into the hug as if holding her tighter might make the chaos around us disappear for a moment.
