As I got out of my car, I was glad to leave the awkward state caused by my parents. Ever since they let me off the hook, they had been acting strange. It was most likely because they felt bad for holding me hostage when I chose to do something that I thought was right, but you never know with my family. I was just glad that I was allowed to leave the house and keep my phone by my side at all times. I said goodbye and shut the door behind me, walking into the queue for the security check. My brown boots clicked against the ground as my knee length dress swayed with my hips.
I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been thinking about Dylan since his game last Saturday. I already knew how attractive he was, just by talking to him, but seeing him do extremely well at something he liked doing, upped his attractiveness. Not to mention the fact that he came over to me, leaving Melony behind him, to comment on my cheering. A toothless smile curled my lips as I replayed his words in my head. What made that day even better was the fact that he walked me home, since Kyan snuck away and left.
Upon entering the high school building, I accommodated the usual waves and smiles of my schoolmates. I occasionally enjoyed the attention I received from the photos and the interview, but sometimes it got out of hand. The typical smiling and small talk was something I could handle, but when they began to crowd around the lunch table where Kyan and I sat, that was where I drew the line. I never said anything to them of course, but it was still uncomfortable for all of us as they tried to squish into the tiny seats.
As I stood at my locker, pulling out my English Literature book, 'To Kill A Mockingbird', I saw a red head coming closer. "Hey!" I smiled as I tucked the book in my bag.
Kyan was wearing a very grunge looking outfit, her hair smushed by a black beanie. She had a white sleeveless shirt tucked into her black denim shorts, a pair of black stockings underneath with her black boots coming up above her knee and a red leather jacket over her. She barely looked at me as she took her place beside me and opened up her locker. My smile soon began to fade as I wondered what got her so glum and upset this early in the morning. She hadn't said anything yesterday, nor the night before when we were on the phone.
"You okay?" Silence. "What's wrong?" Kyan looked at me with a sour expression before scoffing as she turned back to her books. "Are you mad at me?" I hadn't done anything wrong. "What's your problem?"
"You! You're my problem!" Now, I wishing that she was still giving me the cold shoulder.
I grabbed her shoulder and she smacked off my hand, glaring at me before she rolled her eyes. "Could you tell me what I did?"
"After everything I've done for you, you go and stab me in the back like that?" Her tongue fired harsh words.
She slammed the locker door and I jumped, watching her push past people as she walked away. What was her deal? I shook my head as I walked to class, tracing back our interactions for something that could've set her off. I hadn't done anything wrong, nothing at all. Or maybe I just couldn't remember. But why wouldn't I remember? The bell for first period rang through my ears as I walked into my English Literature class, Mrs.Olie sitting at her desk with a grim expression on her face.
"Sit down, Mrs.Clemens." She gestured to the empty chair and I rushed over to it. "Listen up. I have a deal for you criminals." She stood up, adjusting her glasses. "We were supposed to have a guest speaker today, but he didn't show up."
"Aww." The class teased.
"Spare me." Mrs.Olie bit back. "I don't have any of my teaching materials with me because the lecture was supposed to take the entire hour. So guess what? You have the entire period to do whatever you want. Read the book, or don't. I could care less." She threw her hands up as she headed towards the door. "Just keep the noise down. Deal?"
