Luis's optimism had dwindled over recent days as the reality of losing Sabrina loomed. So much so that he'd considered anything that would prolong his stay in America. Meanwhile, as he gazed into the mirror, Luis recalled Sabrina's dislike for straight-laced styles.
Settling on dark slacks, a white button-collar shirt, and a navy sports coat, Luis dressed casually. He exuded confidence on the surface, yet as he entered the suite, Jim noted the hidden apprehension.
"Nervous?"
Luis smirked. "I hope she remembers."
The phone rang immediately after.
"See, she didn't forget," Caroline jested.
Luis sneered and answered.
"Waiting long?" Sabrina's voice carried a teasing tone.
Jim and Caroline observed their son's pleasant glow, but despite appearing content, Luis also looked worried.
"Something like that," he replied.
"I'm sorry, I was helping my mother."
"Noted." He paused. "Did you get some rest?"
"A little."
"Then the service went well?"
Sabrina hesitated. "Everything went fine."
Luis settled into a nearby chair. "I'm glad. I've made reservations at Bistro Royale--I hope that's adequate?"
Sabrina glanced at Julia, who was watching from across the room. "That sounds great. What time?"
"Eight pm."
"I'll be ready."
After hanging up, she joined her mother in the kitchen.
"Was that Luis?" Julia asked.
"Yeah." Sabrina smiled. "I guess you suspected as much."
"It isn't exactly a secret."
Sabrina turned away and picked up the morning paper.
"Something wrong?"
Julia didn't relish surprises, but Luis had visited, and she needed to know. "Luis was here," she admitted.
Her mother stepped back. "What do you mean?"
Sabrina hesitated again. "The other morning, I turned around and there he was."
Julia's eyes narrowed. "How serious is it between you two?"
Sabrina approached her mother. "He's taking me to dinner, so we'll see."
Julia appreciated the honesty, but there was something else she needed to know. "Do you love him?"
Sabrina met her gaze and shrugged. "I'm not rushing into anything, but... I know I do."
