Light and L sat across from each other in one of the private rooms at headquarters. The small space was dimly lit, with only a single lamp on the table casting shadows across the room. There was a tension in the air, a kind of quiet that seemed almost deliberate as if both of them were measuring each other's every word and action.
Light, as usual, was calm and composed, his expression reflecting nothing but genuine concern. His voice was steady as he spoke. "Ryuzaki, don't you think it's strange how Y/N's been acting recently?" he asked, his tone carrying a hint of curiosity. "She's been around a lot more lately. And it almost feels like she's trying too hard to help. It makes me wonder if she has something to hide."
L glanced up from his usual crouched position in the chair, his thumb lightly resting against his bottom lip. He listened intently but kept his face expressionless. Light's words didn't come as a surprise; L was aware of Y/N's recent actions and behavior. She had been getting close, maybe even too close, and had an unpredictable way about her. But that didn't necessarily mean she was Kira.
"Interesting observation," L replied, his voice monotone. "But she's not the only one who's been acting strange." He didn't elaborate, instead keeping his eyes locked on Light, almost as if daring him to say more.
Light didn't flinch; he was too skilled at this game. "I just think it's worth noting," he continued, as if casually offering his insight. "Y/N seems very... determined to be involved in the investigation. She's always hanging around, and sometimes, it feels like she's trying to distract us. Maybe even trying to gather information for her own reasons."
L's gaze didn't waver. He was considering Light's words, but he wasn't about to jump to conclusions. "She's eager to prove herself," he said, as if stating a simple fact. "That could be because she wants to help catch Kira. Or..." he trailed off, letting the implication hang in the air.
"Or because she's Kira," Light finished for him, his tone soft and measured. He wasn't trying to push the idea too hard, just planting a seed. "Think about it. If she were Kira, getting close to us and monitoring our progress would be a smart move. She could stay one step ahead of us, know what leads we're following, and throw us off course whenever she needed to."
L's expression didn't change, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—a slight narrowing, almost as if he was weighing Light's suggestion. "It's a plausible theory," he admitted. "But then again, if she were Kira, allowing herself to be placed under suspicion so easily would be a risky choice."
Light nodded, as though he understood L's reasoning. "True, but maybe she's trying to make us think she's innocent by being a little reckless. It would be the perfect way to throw us off—make herself seem like the last person who'd actually be Kira."
The room fell silent again, the only sound being the faint hum of the air conditioning. L remained still, his thumb now lightly tapping his lip as he processed everything. Light was clearly trying to shift some of the suspicion onto Y/N, but that didn't mean he was lying. He could be telling the truth, or he could be using this opportunity to redirect attention away from himself.
"Tell me, Light," L finally said, "why are you so concerned about Y/N? Is it because you think she's dangerous, or is there something else?"
The question was direct, but Light didn't hesitate. "I just want to make sure we don't overlook any possibilities. If Y/N is somehow connected to Kira, we should be taking that seriously. We can't afford to miss anything."
L leaned back slightly in his chair, his eyes still locked on Light. "You're right. We can't afford to miss anything," he agreed, though his tone was neutral. He wasn't defending Y/N, but he wasn't accepting Light's suspicions as fact either.
