Y/N found herself alone in the office, papers scattered across the table where Light had been working earlier. He'd left in a rush, something about a call from his father, leaving behind a mess of notes, textbooks, and folders. She took a moment to glance around—no one else was there. This was the perfect opportunity to dig a little deeper, so she reached over and began carefully rifling through his things.
As she skimmed through Light's notes, flipping through pages on criminology and random university notes, a small, crumpled piece of paper fell from between the pages of one book which she accidentaly touched. But the second her fingertips brushed against the paper's rough surface, an icy chill shot through her body.
A prickling feeling crawled up her spine, as if someone—or something—was watching her. Her breath hitched, and she spun around, expecting to see someone standing there.
And there it was.
A tall, terrifying creature loomed in the corner of the room, grinning with sharp teeth, with dark, leathery wings spread slightly around its bony frame. Her heart leapt to her throat as she took in its grotesque, skeletal features and wide, bulging eyes that stared directly at her. She stifled a scream, instinctively gripping the desk behind her for support, her eyes fixed on the creature as it watched her with a gleeful grin.
It tilted its head, as if amused, but said nothing.
"What... what the hell?" she managed to stammer, forcing herself to stay still. The creature's hollow eyes flicked over her, taking her in, but it remained silent, only regarding her with a curious expression, as though this were the most normal situation in the world.
She blinked, fighting her instinct to panic, wondering if she was hallucinating. There was no logical explanation for what she was seeing. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of it. Maybe it's a hallucination from stress, she thought, but her gut told her this wasn't her imagination.
Then she glanced down at the small piece of paper still in her hand, crumpled between her fingers. That's when it hit her. The moment she touched the paper, this thing had appeared. It didn't make sense, but somehow, she was certain the two were connected. She stuffed the paper into her pocket, hoping to avoid alerting the creature any further, and tried to calm her racing heart.
"Just... ignore it. Whatever it is, it's not real," she muttered to herself, though her gaze kept darting back to the creature, her voice more shaken than she wanted it to be. The creature's grin widened, as though it could hear her thoughts, relishing in her discomfort. Still, it didn't speak.
She quickly finished going through Light's things, but didn't find anything unusual—just ordinary papers and notebooks. No matter how carefully she checked, there was nothing incriminating, nothing to confirm her suspicions about Light.
Taking a shaky breath, Y/N glanced one last time at the creature before grabbing her things and leaving the office, her mind reeling with questions. She would tell L about it, but without any proof, it might sound like she was losing her mind.
And all the while, she couldn't shake the creature's silent, gleeful stare.
