Light Yagami sat at his desk, a pen spinning lazily between his fingers. The Death Note lay open in front of him, its pages practically glowing in the dim light of his room. He stared at it intently, his eyes cold and calculating.
"She's becoming a problem," he said, his tone low but sharp.
Ryuk, perched casually on the edge of Light's bed, tilted his head and grinned. "Oh? And who's the problem this time?"
"Y/N," Light said without hesitation. "She's been absent from work for over a week, and now that she's back, she's different—quieter but sharper. She's watching me, I can feel it. It's almost as if she knows something."
Ryuk's grin widened, but he said nothing.
Light continued, his voice steady but laced with annoyance. "She's unpredictable, and unpredictability is dangerous. I can't afford loose ends, especially not now."
He tapped the Death Note with the pen, his gaze unwavering. "I should just write her name."
Ryuk chuckled, his skeletal shoulders shaking. "You're really something, Light. Always so quick to make decisions."
Light's eyes narrowed. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means," Ryuk said, leaning forward slightly, "you should think this one through. Writing her name might not be the smartest move."
Light frowned, clearly displeased. "Why not? She's a liability. If she gets too close to the truth—"
"But has she?" Ryuk interrupted, his tone teasing. "You said it yourself—she's only watching you. She hasn't acted. No accusations, no evidence. Maybe she's just curious. Killing her now would only raise suspicion."
Light sat back, considering Ryuk's words. He hated to admit it, but the Shinigami had a point. Y/N's death, especially if it were anything other than a heart attack, would draw attention. And if she wasn't onto him yet, her sudden death could lead the task force straight to him.
"You think I should wait?" Light asked, his voice carefully neutral.
Ryuk's grin never wavered. "I think you should be smart, Light. You're good at playing the long game. Killing her now could be a mistake you can't undo."
Light's fingers drummed against the desk as he mulled it over. He hated being second-guessed, but he couldn't ignore the logic. Y/N was sharp, but she wasn't a threat—not yet. If he acted too hastily, he could jeopardize everything he'd worked for.
"Fine," he said finally, closing the Death Note. "But if she steps out of line—"
"You'll do what you do best," Ryuk finished for him, chuckling.
Light shot him a glare but said nothing. He leaned back in his chair, his mind already racing with contingency plans.
Ryuk watched him with amusement, his glowing eyes betraying none of his thoughts. He wouldn't tell Light that Y/N could see him. It wasn't his job to intervene, only to watch. And besides, this little game was far more entertaining than he'd expected.
As Light returned to his scheming, Ryuk leaned back and grinned to himself. This was going to get interesting.
