Chapter 40

Y/N sat curled up on the couch, scrolling aimlessly through her phone while L remained perched in his usual position, his laptop screen glowing faintly as he typed. The silence between them was familiar, almost soothing, but tonight it felt heavier somehow, as if something unsaid lingered in the air.

She glanced up, breaking the stillness. "You've been awfully quiet tonight, detective. Should I be worried?"

L didn't look away from the screen, but the corners of his mouth twitched into the faintest hint of a smile. "I assure you, I'm perfectly fine. Just... thinking."

"About what?" she asked, setting her phone down and turning her full attention to him.

He paused, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. "About the future."

L finally turned to face her, his dark eyes studying her intently. "The Kira case may be closed, but there's always another mystery, another injustice to unravel. I've been offered another case—something in the United States."

Y/N raised an eyebrow. "Another case already? You don't even take a day off, do you?"

"Justice doesn't rest," he replied, though there was a teasing lilt to his voice.

She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. "And what does that mean for us? For me?"

L tilted his head, his expression unreadable. "That depends entirely on you. The invitation to join me still stands. This case is... different. Complex. I could use your perspective."

Her heart raced at the implication, but she played it cool, leaning back with a smirk. "So, what kind of case are we talking about? Another serial killer? Corrupt government officials? Or something even crazier?"

L hesitated for a moment before answering. "It involves a network of individuals who have been evading authorities for decades. Their methods are sophisticated, their connections deep. It will require complete focus and... trust."

The weight of his words settled between them, and Y/N knew he wasn't just talking about the case.

She let out a low whistle. "Sounds dangerous. And you want me to dive headfirst into that with you?"

He gave her a rare, genuine smile. "I can think of no one better."

Y/N chuckled, though her chest tightened at the warmth in his tone. "Well, how can I say no to that? I'm in."

L nodded, satisfied. "We leave tomorrow morning."

Her eyes widened. "Tomorrow morning? Are you kidding me? I haven't even packed!"

"You'll manage," he said lightly, turning back to his laptop.

Y/N stared at him for a moment before shaking her head, a grin tugging at her lips.

She couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.

And as she looked at L, engrossed in his work, she realized that whatever came next, she wouldn't face it alone.

This was a new chapter, a new start, to her new life...
