The following day, Y/N found herself back at theHQ, her mind racing with a mix of suspicion and frustration. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was on the cusp of unraveling everything. If only she could get Light to slip up.
As luck would have it, Light Yagami approached her with his usual polite charm. "Y/N," he said with a warm smile, "you've been keeping to yourself lately. Everything okay?"
She matched his energy, playing along. "Oh, you know, just dealing with a lot. The usual."
They walked side by side through the corridors, keeping their voices low. The atmosphere felt casual, but Y/N couldn't ignore the tension brewing underneath.
Light, on the surface, appeared calm and collected, but inside, his thoughts were anything but. She's dangerous, he mused. She's not like the others—there's something unnervingly sharp about her. His eyes briefly flicked to Ryuk, who hovered near them.
That moment of hesitation didn't go unnoticed. Y/N, catching the subtle glance, decided to test the waters. "You see him too, don't you?"
Light stopped walking and gave her a puzzled look. "See who?" he asked, his tone perfectly measured.
Y/N smirked, crossing her arms. "Don't try gaslighting me, Light. I know you see him. The shinigami."
Light felt a chill run down his spine but forced himself to maintain his composure. Inside, his mind spiraled. How does she know about shinigamis? How can she see Ryuk? And does she know about the Death Note?
Still, he played his part. "Shinigami?" he repeated, laughing nervously. "You must be imagining things, Y/N. I don't know what you're talking about."
Ryuk, watching the exchange, erupted into loud, cackling laughter. His piercing, hollow voice filled the air, but only Light and Y/N could hear it.
Y/N raised an eyebrow, not buying his act for a second. "Sure," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I'll pretend I believe you."
Light's thoughts raced. She's too smart. If I admit anything, she'll use it against me. But if I deny it completely, she might push harder. Finally, he decided on a middle ground. "Well," he began cautiously, "I've... seen something too. I thought I was cursed at first. I don't really know what it is."
Ryuk laughed even harder at Light's weak attempt to spin the narrative, but still, he said nothing.
Y/N tilted her head, her eyes narrowing. "How interesting," she replied. She didn't believe a word of it, but she decided to play along. "Maybe we're both cursed, huh?"
Light forced a small laugh, but inside, he was seething. This is getting out of hand. If she knows about the Death Note...
Their conversation fizzled out, both of them pretending everything was fine. But Y/N had already made up her mind about what needed to be done.
After the conversation with Light, Y/N barged into the main office. The room was bustling with activity, with L and the team focused on their usual work. The moment she entered, the room seemed to freeze.
"I have something to say," Y/N announced, her voice was firm.
Everyone turned to look at her, including L, who tilted his head slightly in curiosity.
"If I die," she continued, her tone sharp, "no matter how it happens—even if it looks like suicide—Kira is Light Yagami."
The room fell into stunned silence. The words hung in the air like a thunderclap, leaving everyone speechless.
Before anyone could respond, Y/N turned on her heel and walked out, leaving behind a room full of confusion and unease.
L stared after her, his analytical mind racing. Why would she say that? What does she know?
The rain poured heavily as Y/N made her way back home, her clothes soaked and her mind in turmoil. She could barely think straight, the weight of everything pressing down on her.
She didn't hear the footsteps behind her until L called out her name.
"Y/N!"
She stopped but didn't turn around. Her shoulders slumped as the rain continued to drench her.
"Y/N," L called again, his voice softer this time. He finally caught up to her, grabbing her hand and turning her around to face him.
"What are you doing?" he asked, his dark eyes searching hers.
Y/N couldn't find the words. She was overwhelmed, overstimulated, unsure of how to explain everything. Without thinking, she stepped closer and hugged him.
L stood frozen for a moment, his arms stiff at his sides. But when she buried her face in his neck, something inside him softened. Slowly, he wrapped one arm around her waist, holding her close.
The rain continued to fall, but in that moment, neither of them seemed to care.
Meanwhile, at Light's house, things were far from calm.
Light was pacing his room, his frustration boiling over. He grabbed a glass from his desk and threw it against the wall, shattering it into pieces.
"Damn it, Ryuk!" he shouted. "You knew she could see you, didn't you?"
Ryuk, lounging nearby and munching on an apple, shrugged. "I didn't tell her anything, I swear. She figured it out on her own."
Light clenched his fists, his mind a storm of anger and confusion. "How? How does she see you? Does she know about the Death Note? Is she another user? None of this makes sense!"
Ryuk chuckled, clearly enjoying Light's meltdown. "Relax, Light. She doesn't know about the Death Note. And if she did, she wouldn't have waited this long to use it against you."
Light's jaw tightened as he grabbed the Death Note, flipping it open to a blank page. He stared at it, his pen hovering over the paper. He was one move away from writing her name.
But something stopped him.
A gut instinct, a voice in the back of his mind, told him not to do it. Killing her now would only make things worse.
He slammed the notebook shut, throwing it onto his desk. His thoughts were a chaotic mix of rage, fear, and something else he couldn't quite place.
"She's going to ruin everything," he muttered, his voice low and dangerous.
Ryuk just grinned, taking another bite of his apple. "You're in for a wild ride, Light."
Light glared at him, his mind already plotting his next move. She won't win. I'll make sure of it.
