Y/N unlocked the door to L's hotel room, flipping the switch as she entered. The sudden light illuminated the space, and she froze for a split second when she saw L's figure hunched over at the small table, his dark hair falling into his eyes, deep in thought. He looked up at her entrance, his expression unreadable, but she could feel a tension in the air that was new.
"Where have you been?" he asked, his tone flat but laced with an edge that she didn't quite catch.
"Just visiting Light," she replied casually, shrugging off the momentary unease. It wasn't like she had anything to hide, after all. "We were talking about the case, you know? Trying to figure things out."
L's eyes narrowed slightly, and she noted the way his fingers tapped rhythmically against the table. "You went to his house without telling me first," he stated, the calmness of his voice doing little to mask the annoyance simmering beneath the surface.
"Relax, it's not like I was doing anything crazy," Y/N shot back, trying to keep the mood light, but the way L's gaze pierced through her made her pulse quicken. "It's just a conversation. You can't expect me to only talk to you about this, right?"
He stood up slowly, his movements deliberate. "It's not that simple. You don't know him like I do." The air thickened with an unspoken tension, and Y/N couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and dread at the underlying current of jealousy in his words.
"Maybe I want to know him," she teased, stepping further into the room. "You can't keep me locked away, Ryuzaki." She placed emphasis on his alias, her voice playful. "I'm a free agent, remember?"
L's expression didn't change, but she caught the slightest twitch of his mouth—almost a frown. "This isn't a game, Y/N. If you're going to be out there, you need to be careful. Light Yagami isn't just some college student; he's a suspect, and I need to know what you're discussing with him."
Y/N crossed her arms, trying to keep her tone light. "I get that, but you can't act like I'm in a cage. I'm not some delicate flower, L. I can handle myself."
For a moment, the room was silent, the tension hanging between them like a charged wire. L looked at her, his gaze unyielding, and she felt a rush of heat at the intensity of his stare. It was like he was searching for something in her eyes—trust, maybe, or a hint of the truth about what she had been doing.
"I just don't want you getting hurt," he said finally, the hardness in his voice softening slightly. It was a rare glimpse of concern from him, and Y/N found herself momentarily disarmed.
"Come on, I know what I'm doing. Light is smart, but I'm smarter." She took a step closer to him, hoping to close the distance that had formed. "Besides, he's trying to help his father with the case, right? Maybe not."
"Is he?" L leaned back against the table, studying her. "Or is he trying to shift the blame elsewhere? You need to think critically, Y/N. Everything is a potential lie when it comes to Kira."
Her irritation bubbled up again, and she couldn't help but snap back. "I get it, L! But you sound paranoid."
L straightened up, and for a brief moment, she thought he might actually shout at her, but instead, he turned his gaze away, a flicker of frustration crossing his features. "You're right. I'm just... cautious.I don't want anything to happen to you."
Y/N softened at his words, the walls she had built up around her beginning to crumble. "I appreciate that. But I can take care of myself. I promise."
"Just... keep me updated next time, okay?" L asked, his voice almost pleading. "I don't want to be blindsided."
"Fine, I'll keep you updated," she said with a small smile, hoping to lighten the mood. "You can count on me."
A/N~ L is jealous, possibly?
