"the fourth is keeping control. a good cult leader knows how to keep control." he finally says after a few moments of just watching you.

you still don't know why he's telling you all that but you truly don't dare questioning him.

"after convincing you that they're the best friends you've ever had and bombarding you with the cult's ideology, the cultists' next job is to make sure they hang on to you. there's a variety of techniques they can use to accomplish this, but these usually involve iteratively subjecting the cult recruit to terror and love."

you don't even notice yourself barely nodding, showing Hisoka that you understand what he said.

that's a lie though, somewhat at least.

you understand what he said, know what the words mean he's told you and can make sense out of them, but you truly do not know why he is telling you all of that.

the cult his gone.

he said it himself; this town was once home to a cult.

so why does he feel the need to tell you all this?

silence falls over you two for a few moments as you keep your hands busy with work and your head busy with thoughts while Hisoka just keeps watching you.

you may not see him watching you, but you feel him watching you.

there's a shudder costing your neck and back, ready to make you shake any second while your head and face feel hot at how intense Hisokas eyes burn into the side of it.

"aren't you going to ask my why I'm telling you that?" he suddenly asks and from the tone of his voice you can already tell that he's grinning almost viciously.

a glance st him only confirms that.

"why are you telling me this?" you finally question and surpress a frustrated sigh.

Hisoka chuckles before pressing himself away from the shelf with one swift motion.

"think about that yourself" he says as he walks away.

you're left frustrated, annoyed and in disbelief.

how how much you'd like to grab him by his shoulders and shake him until he gets back to his senses.

but you won't.

you don't want to hurt him, neither do you want to make scene or lose your job.

because aside from him you actually like working here.

with a sigh you rub your eyes, tell yourself that in a few more hours you'll be free of him before you continue to work.

Hisoka returns to you to say random stuff every ten minutes and you cannot wait to go home for the day.

you see that you've got a few messages when you take out your phone on your break.

your mother as texted you as well as your great uncles sister and a few friends.

after the funeral you only sent her a quick text in passing, barely remembering it.

you open your mom's message first.

she's asking you how you're doing, when you got time to call her again and asking you to text her a bit more because she misses you.

you text her back, asking her if today is fine and promising her that you'll text her more and that you miss both her and your dad as well.

you open the message of your great uncle's sister next.

she's asking you if you'd like to drink a tea at her place anytime soon.

you tell her that you would love to, that you're going to tell her what fits best for you and that you can talk about it once you're home.

then, you answer your friends.

they've only really occasionally texted you but so did you.

'how is the ghost in your house?' reads one of the messages and you smile.

'oh he is really great, he's kind and attentive' you text back.

an answer follows almost immediately.

'HAHAHHAHA GOOD FOR YOU'

you know they think you're joking because before you moved in they told you that you will probably have a ghost in your house because it's so old.

it was a joke of course.

you never told them that they were right, never told them how afraid you were the first week and how much your perception on Chrollo has changed since.

for them this it's a ongoing joke while you told them the truth.

'when are you guy's going to visit me?' you ask in the groupchat.

there is no answer for a few minutes so you quietly enjoy the rest of your break.

after you return from your break, you're put at the cash register.

a lot of costumers came in and filling the shelves needs to go quick so Hisoka was tasked to do so.

"besides, you need to work at the cash register at some point anyways" your boss had said with a smile.

working at the register is nice.

you greet costumers, have quick smalltalk with them, tell them their total, they pay and tell them to have a great day.

the people in this town are incredibly nice.

they greet you back, smile at you and welcome you once they realize that you're new in town.

a mother with her small child even read your name tag and said "welcome to our town (y/n)" with a smile before asking her child to do the same.

the little girl was a little shy and buried her face in her mom's jacket but welcoming you nonetheless.

your heart melted at the sight.

the last few hours of your shift fly by.

you love sitting at the cash register especially since Hisoka can't bother you there.

"See you tomorrow!" your boss say's as he let's you out through the back.

you return his words and go to your car.

you unlock it, sit yourself down on the drivers seat and close the door again.

it's noon.

you put your seatbelt on and start your car, letting it run warm for a few minutes.

you contemplate going to the library, to just lend the book in the 'local authors' section that you took a peek at and just read it.

or to use the newspaper archive and read through articles about the cult from when they were in the town.

Hisoka somehow managed to make you curious, to make you want to know more.

but for today you only want to rest, to call your parents and forget Hisoka and the stress and annoyance he puts you through at work.

you sigh before driving off.
