WITH HEADPHONES IN HER EARS AND A WALKIE-TALKIE held parallel to her jawline, Rory kept her eyes fixed on the oscillating red numbers in front of her, ensuring she remained at 90 dB. The dark environment heightened the adrenaline and sharpened her focus.
Harrington lifted his gaze from the quiet road to the rearview mirror above him. It gave him a centered view of his girlfriend sitting in the backseat and gently swaying with the car's movement.
She had already taken off her coat, revealing the black turtleneck that fit her like a glove, the sleeve rolled up on the arm she had raised above her head, resting on the wheel. His eyes slid down her bare arm and noticed the gold watch he had given her for her nineteenth birthday the previous year.
She was so beautiful when focused, her brows slightly furrowed, her lips pressed together, her hair cascading over her face like a waterfall...
Suddenly, a continuous honk blared, and Steve jerked the wheel to swerve around a car.
"Jeez, Steve?! What happened?" she asked, raising her voice and glancing at him wide-eyed while trying to stay steady.
"Shit! I said I was gonna get distracted—" He shook his head and let out a brief sigh.
"Why? Are you okay?"
"Yeah, it's just..." He glanced over his shoulder. "I've got the best company ever back here, and I can't even look at her properly," he said teasingly.
Rory's tense expression melted into an eye roll and a smirk. She looked back at the numbers, but she wasn't as focused.
"But think about it—if you don't focus on the road, you might never get to look at me again—"
Suddenly, the red numbers started dropping fast.
"Shit! We're losing him!"
"Wait, what?" She raised a confused glance at the rearview mirror.
"STOP!"
At Rory's panicked shout, Steve slams his foot onto the brake pedal, hearing the tires screech on the asphalt, stopping in the middle of the road.
Not knowing what had happened, Rory's heart started to race irregularly. "Did I do something wrong? I, uh..." She looked around, trying to spot anything that might indicate a mistake on her part— something out of place.
Leaning his arm on the seatback, Steve turned to look at her.
"Keep turning the wheel until you find him again," he advised calmly, an antidote to the girl's stress.
