The day ended with joy and satisfaction for her family, but not for her. All the relatives left for their respective homes one by one, offering her plenty of advice "Do this, do that, don't eat this, and don't eat that." Tired of responding, she managed to smile-a smile that didn't quite reach her heart, given only out of respect for the elders. Adithya's brother, who lived in the city with his wife and daughter, was busy with his election campaign and couldn't attend the baby shower. He wished his brother over the phone and promised to visit after the elections. As evening approached, the house fell silent, returning to its everyday routine, except for the decorations that reminded her of the baby shower held that very morning. Nithya was in the kitchen making tea for her family. She transferred the tea into cups and took them to the hall, where her grandparents and in-laws discussed the baby shower. After serving them, she returned to the kitchen to have her own cup of tea. Since before her marriage, Nithya had been responsible for the kitchen. Her grandparents were very conservative, even though they had servants for all other tasks, they didn't allow them in the kitchen. The kitchen work was meant to be managed solely by the daughter-in-law of the family. Before Nithya, her mother-in-law had done all the cooking, but after Nithya's arrival, she began assigning small tasks to her. Soon enough, however, everything fell to Nithya's shoulders. Despite her mother-in-law's harsh behavior, Nithya never felt burdened, she was grateful to care for her family. She neither hated nor loved her mother-in-law, simply obeying her every command as a dutiful daughter-in-law. After finishing her tea, she began to prepare dinner. Since they had a heavy lunch during the function, she made a light dinner as per her mother-in-law's instructions. Once done, she went to her room to lie down for a while, her back aching terribly. At 8 p.m., she went downstairs to serve dinner to everyone, expecting her husband to be there. When she noticed his absence, she concluded he wouldn't be home yet. After dinner, everyone retired to their rooms. Her grandmother reminded her to eat and take her medicines on time before leaving for her own room. Besides her grandparents, she had no one else to care for her, but even a few caring words from them brought her happiness. Nithya didn't expect her husband to shower her with love and attention, but she wished he would show at least some concern for the baby she was carrying. He had never accompanied her to the hospital for check-ups and didn't even know the name of the hospital she was visiting. After everyone left to their rooms, she began cleaning the dining table and decided to wait for her husband's arrival. As time passed, fatigue overcame her, and she dozed off on the couch near the dining table. At 12:30 a.m., Adithya came home and saw his wife sleeping on the couch. He walked over and paused, gazing at her for a few moments. His eyes drifted down to her swollen belly, where their baby resided. He stood there for several minutes, raising his hand to touch her belly but withdrawing at her sudden movement, retreating to his room. Nithya sensed a presence and opened her eyes, half-expecting it to be her husband, but saw no one. Getting up from the couch, she walked to the window to check if his car was parked in the driveway. Seeing it there, she returned to the dining table to see if he had eaten. Noticing the untouched food hurt her, and she placed the dishes inside the fridge before heading to her room on empty stomach.
