"What?" asked her grandmother, not comprehending what Nithya meant.
"I want to leave, I don't want to live here anymore," Nithya said, avoiding everyone's gaze.
"What do you mean by 'you don't want to live here anymore'? Where do you intend to go?" her grandmother asked, her voice rising in anger.
"I don't want to live in this hell. Just leave me alone," Nithya cried, clasping her hands together in desperation.
The room fell silent, and everyone was taken aback by her words. Adhitya was in a state of disbelief, he never imagined Nithya would make such a drastic decision.
Adhitya rose abruptly from his chair, slamming his hand on the table. "What do you think you're talking about? Are you out of your mind? Where do you think you'll go? Do you have anyone to take you in? The moment you step out of this house, you are just a begger."
Nithya flinched at his harsh tone, fear flashing in her eyes, but she tried to conceal it.
Hearing his words, Adhitya's grandmother interjected. "Stop it, Adhi! Is this how you speak to your wife, especially when she's pregnant? Don't scare her, that could harm the baby."
She turned to Nithya, her voice softening. "Nithya dear, what happened? Did Adhi scold you? Please tell me, and I'll handle him. Just don't talk like this anymore, okay? Now come, eat your breakfast, the baby must be hungry. You should take your medicine too."
"No, Grandma, I'm serious. I don't want to live here, just let me be and allow me to live my life peacefully," Nithya insisted.
"Shut up! Where will you go with my baby? You can leave wherever you want after you've delivered, but not a single step out of this house with my baby, understood?" he shouted, frustration boiling over.
"No, I won't give my baby to anyone. I will keep my baby with me," Nithya said, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Nithya, stop talking nonsense. Where will you go in this state? Are you out of your mind? If there's anything between you and Adhitya, I'll talk to him. Don't entertain such thoughts, they might harm the baby," her grandfather warned, concern etched on his face.
"No matter what you say, I won't stay in this house for even a minute," Nithya declared with fierce determination.
"Nithya, where will you go and how will you survive?" her grandmother asked, her worry palpable.
"I'll go to my mother's farmhouse. Just give me my bank passbook and ATM card, I'll take care of my own life," Nithya replied resolutely.
"Oh, so you've planned everything? I won't let you go anywhere with my baby—just dream it!" Adhitya retorted, his anger intensifying.
Adhitya's mother observed the scene, unsure how to respond. If Nithya left, all the household responsibilities would fall on her, and she was preoccupied with her own concerns.
"Nithya, don't talk foolishness. What will our relatives and neighbors think if you leave the house? I won't allow this to happen as long as I'm alive," her grandmother insisted.
"No, Grandma, I don't care what people think. I just want to live my life peacefully with my baby. I don't want to be a maid to anyone," Nithya said, wiping away her tears.
Now Adhitya understood the depth of her frustration, the word "maid" struck a deep chord within her.
"Nithya, don't you respect us? Just listen to us and go inside," her grandfather urged gently.
"No, Grandpa, I won't listen to anyone anymore. Just let me go," Nithya said firmly.
"Nithya, if you leave the house now, consider that you have no one. Your grandparents might as well be gone, just like your parents," her grandmother warned, her voice trembling.
Adhitya interjected, "Grandma, please be quiet! Let me see where she thinks she'll go." He grasped her wrist, intending to lead her back to his room, believing that with time she would cool down.
Nithya struggled to free her hand from his grip, but her efforts were futile, he was stronger than her.
"If you make me stay here, you won't see your child come into this world," Nithya shouted.
Shocked by her statement, Adhitya turned toward her and asked, "What did you say?"
"Yes, if you try to lock me up in the room, I'll kill myself and the baby," she said, looking into his eyes.
