Everyone was looking at him with shocked faces. He neither spoke to his wife nor discussed her with anyone in the house, but today, seeing him take his wife's side was extremely new to them. He changed out of his office wear into casual clothes and was about to leave. By his attire, they definitely knew he was not going to the office. Noticing their silence, he turned to them with a frown on his face and left the house.
Despite her grandmother's and husband's words, Nithya walked toward the kitchen and started cooking for her family. Nithya's grandmother shot an angry look at Adhitya's mom before retreating to her room.
The rest of the day passed as usual—taking a nap after lunch, serving tea and snacks to her family, and preparing dinner. After dinner, everyone went to their respective rooms. As always, her grandmother advised her to eat and take her medicines on time, unaware that Nithya was going to bed on an empty stomach every night due to her preachings (a wife should not eat before her husband). Even though she knew her husband wouldn't be home early, she decided to wait for him for dinner.
To her surprise, he came home early with a carry bag in his hand, placed it on the table, and went to freshen up.
Curiosity piqued, Nithya wanted to know what was inside the bag. A fruity smell wafted through the air, revealing its contents. Her mouth watered at the scent of ripe mangoes, but just as she was about to peek inside, Adhitya came downstairs and asked her to serve the food. This was the first time he had ever asked her to serve him after their marriage. Nithya was thrilled and hurried to the kitchen to bring the dishes.
Adhitya noticed that the fruits he had bought were untouched, still sitting where he had left them. She served him the food and then stood beside him, waiting for anything he might need. Adhitya began to eat silently, and after a few seconds, he asked her, "Did you have your food?"
Nithya slowly shook her head. "Are you mad or what? Do you need instructions for everything? Did you forget the doctor's words? Come, sit and eat," he yelled, pulling her by the wrist to make her sit in the chair beside him.
Tears began to spill from Nithya's eyes as she witnessed his care for her, for the first time. She had been longing for this moment her entire life, but deep down, she understood the reason for his newfound concern—it was all because of the baby she was carrying.
She quickly wiped her tears before he could notice and served herself some food. As she began to eat, Adhitya finished his meal and got up from the table. Before leaving for his room, without looking at her, he said, "I bought fruits for you. If you crave something, just tell me; I'll buy it for you," and then left.
With tears in her eyes, Nithya caressed her belly and whispered, "See, baby, Daddy cares for you. You are not alone like me." She wiped her tears and started cleaning the dishes and the kitchen. When she opened the bag, her heart swelled with joy at the sight of her favorite mangoes, along with some jamun, gooseberries, and raw mangoes. Recently, she had been craving these fruits, and she felt a surge of happiness that her cravings had been fulfilled by her husband. It had always been her dream to be taken care of by him.
After completing her chores, Nithya slowly climbed the stairs and went to her room. Adhitya was working on his laptop and lifted his head as soon as she entered, only to divert his gaze back to the screen. Nithya went to the washroom to take a bath. After changing into a simple cotton saree, she came back to her side of the bed to sleep.
Seeing her lying down, Adhitya asked in a low voice, "Have you taken your medicines?" Realizing that she had forgotten, Nithya abruptly got up and walked to the cupboard where she kept her tablet box. She took her medicines and returned to the bed, lying on her side with her back facing him.
Adhitya noticed her struggle to sleep in a saree, especially with her growing belly. Concerned, he called out softly, "Nithya..." Hearing her name from him sent a shiver down her spine, and she froze in place. When she didn't respond, he called her again, this time louder. "Nithya."
Slowly, she turned to face him, a questioning frown on her face. He said, "If you're uncomfortable in a saree for sleeping, I can buy you some maternity wear. You can wear them at night." Nithya nodded in agreement and turned back to her side to sleep. However, thoughts of the day's events made sleep elusive.
Imagining a happy life with Adhitya and their children brought a smile to her face as she hoped their baby would change everything.
But what if Adhitya broke her heart?
