In the morning, Nithya came out of her room after completing her morning routine. She heard the sound of water splashing in the sink and saw Adhitya washing the puppy with Anith's baby shampoo. The tempting smell of food indicated that he had already cooked breakfast. Nithya looked around the kitchen, it was spotless, perhaps he had cleaned it, she thought.
Adhitya turned to her and smiled, but she didn't react. After washing the puppy, he dried it off and placed it on its bed. However, the puppy quickly got up and began to run around, rolling on the floor. Nithya smiled at the puppy's antics, and Adhitya felt happy to see her smile. He went to the kitchen, brought back a bowl of milk, and fed the puppy. Then, he returned with two cups of coffee, handing one to Nithya before taking a seat on the couch. They both began to sip their coffee, enjoying the playful antics of the puppy.
After a moment, Adhitya asked, "Hmm, Nithya, the puppy needs a checkup. If we're going to keep him, we need to vaccinate him and buy some necessary supplies." Nithya looked at him, thinking, He didn't even take me for a checkup when I was pregnant and never cared about our son's vaccines until a few days ago. Now he's talking about a puppy's checkup? She smiled bitterly.
Adhitya noticed the change in her expression and continued, "Nithya, I can't handle the puppy alone. Can you accompany me to the clinic?" She glanced at the puppy for a few seconds and nodded in agreement. Soon after, Anith woke up, and they all got ready to go to the clinic with the puppy. Adhitya made Anith sit in the front seat of the car, while Nithya took the backseat with the puppy. As Adhitya drove, he stole glances at her in the rearview mirror. The car was quiet except for Anith's giggles, he was kneeling on his seat, supporting himself with both hands on the car window, watching the world go by. Adhitya drove slowly to ensure Anith wouldn't fall.
To break the silence, Adhitya asked, "What should we name him?"
"Maybe we should name him after you," Nithya replied sarcastically.
Adhitya looked at her, stunned by her comment, then laughed at her playful tone, it was cute to him. Nithya frowned at him. "If you like that name so much, then you can name him 'Adhitya'," he joked, looking at her in the mirror. Nithya fell silent. After a few moments, he asked again, "Are you really going to name him after me?"
"He needs a better name," she replied, and Adhitya's expression fell at her comment. The rest of the drive was quiet.
When they reached the clinic, after the vaccination, he took them to the mall to buy essentials for the puppy, such as food, a quilt, a collar, and other supplies. Nithya cradled the puppy in her arms. After exiting the shop, Adhitya asked if she wanted anything, but she declined. He asked again if she wanted to buy something for Anith, but she remained silent.
Next, he took them to a textile store, suggesting Nithya select dresses for Anith. Adhitya carried the puppy while Nithya browsed. The salesperson mentioned that pets weren't allowed, but Adhitya managed to convince them otherwise. As Nithya picked out clothes, Adhitya excused himself for a moment. When he returned, he paid the bill, carrying all the bags while Nithya held the puppy, and Anith took small steps, holding onto Nithya's hands.
They drove back home, and Adhitya unloaded the bags from the trunk, placing them inside the house. Nithya made the puppy's bed and fitted the collar on him, filling a bowl with water and puppy food, placing it nearby so he could eat whenever he was hungry. After setting everything up, Nithya carried Anith to the kitchen to feed him soething, with Adhitya following closely behind.
Nithya frowned as he approached her. He bent down to Anith's level, kissed him goodbye, then leaned over to kiss Nithya on the cheek. Without glancing back, he turned and left, closing his eyes. Nithya wiped her cheek and shot him an angry look.
Two days passed, and life continued in the same way. Anith was in love with the puppy and enjoying his company. Nithya named the puppy "Bro," and Adhitya chuckled when he heard her calling it. He felt relieved, fearing she might actually name the puppy after him.
One morning, while Anith playing with Bro and Nithya was watering the plants in the garden, her grandparents and in-laws arrived with bags in tow. Nithya welcomed them and served coffee. Her grandmother spotted Anith playing with Bro and asked, "Who brought this dog? What if it bites Anith? Don't keep this in the house, just shoo it away."
Nithya felt anger rise within her. She considered the puppy part of her family, but couldn't reply rudely. "Grandma, this puppy is better than many of us. The day he arrived, he became a part of my family. I'm sorry, but I can't abandon him. Anith loves him dearly."
Nithya's grandmother grew angry at her response but hid it well. They invited her to celebrate Diwali at their home, as Prem's family would be joining them, and wanted Nithya to come as well. Nithya received the dresses they had bought for Anith and herself. After spending some time with Anith, her family left for home.
That afternoon at the office, Adhitya needed important documents for a property he had bought a few years ago to set up a factory. He returned home and asked his grandmother for the documents. She handed him the keys to her room's locker and asked him to retrieve them himself.
Adhitya went to her room, opened the locker, and searched for a while, then he got them. When he was about to close the locker, a file caught his attention. Curiosity piqued, he took the file and opened it, surprised by what he found inside.
