After settling into the seat, Nithya felt really weird. It was the first time in the one and a half years of her married life that she was traveling with Adhitya alone in his car. The first time had been when they visited their family deity temple right after their marriage, along with family members.
Adhitya started the car and drove off from the hospital gate, but Nithya felt restless sitting beside him. She felt something in her stomach, like a thousand butterflies fluttering. Despite his hurtful words and negligence, she never hated him and always yearned for at least a single glance from him.
After a few moments of silence, Nithya slowly turned toward him and asked, "What did the doctor say?" His attention focused on the road as he answered, "Nothing you should know of." Disappointed by his answer, she turned her head back to the road. A few seconds later, she asked softly, "Will you accompany me to the hospital for the next checkup as well?" He ignored her question and concentrated on the road. Nithya sighed, knowing he wouldn't answer her, and turned her gaze back to the road.
A few minutes passed, and Adhitya slowed down the car due to some commotion on the road. Nithya saw a woman selling country fruits like jamun, gooseberries, and raw mangoes at the roadside. Seeing that, Nithya got excited but controlled herself, realizing that Adhitya was with her. Her mouth watered at the sight of the sweet and sour fruits, but she didn't have the courage to ask him to buy them. Adhitya noticed her sudden excitement upon seeing the roadside shop, but he acted as if he hadn't noticed it. He felt bad that he was unable to fulfill her pregnancy cravings, but his ego wouldn't let him give in. Maybe if she had asked him to buy them, he would have gladly done so; but she didn't, and this hurt his ego.
The remaining ride back home was silent. Adhitya wondered how she managed to visit the hospital every month in this state. He had never heard of her using the car or anything from his driver about taking her to the hospital. Even at home, he purposefully avoided discussions about the pregnancy by spending more time outside in the name of business.
They reached home after a 20-minute ride. Adhitya got out of the car, followed by Nithya. As they entered the room, their grandmother was shocked to see them together. Adhitya left for his room without talking to anyone. His grandmother worriedly walked toward Nithya and asked, "Nithya, what happened, dear? What took you so long at the hospital? Is the baby alright, and why is Adhitya with you?" Hearing her back-to-back questions, Nithya stopped her by assuring her that everything was alright and narrated everything that happened at the hospital.
Listening to her, their grandmother was concerned about both the mother's and baby's health but was also happy that, at least in this way, Adhitya showed that he cared about their baby. She prayed to God to change him for good and asked Nithya to take some rest. Listening to their conversation, Adhitya's mother interrupted, saying, "Who will cook the food if she takes rest? Sitting idle in this condition is not good for the baby's health, so now go and cook. It's already late."
Suddenly, they heard a voice saying, "Ma, what are you talking about? She is very weak; the doctor has suggested she should take rest and eat healthily, so you cook today. She'll take care of it from tomorrow." Everyone in the room was dumbfounded by his words.
