Nithya woke up from her sleep, as it was her habit to rise early to do her chores. She looked at the clock, it showed 5:30 AM. Her head pounded from crying herself to sleep. Last night's events flashed before her, and tears began to flow uncontrollably. She cried out in despair, "Why is God punishing me from such a young age? What sin have I committed that He took my parents from me? If my parents were alive, would my in-laws treat me this way? Is this how you treat someone who has no one to lean on? Why did God leave me alone in this world?"
She turned to see Adhitya sleeping peacefully, and the word "maid" rang in her ears. Her heart had shattered once when he accused her, the morning after they consummated their marriage. He had been drunk and blamed her for seducing him in his vulnerable state, using words that shattered her character. But now, her heart was completely broken upon realizing that she was just a maid-not only to this family but also for her own baby. The thought of being a maid for her own child was unbearable.
At that moment, all she wanted was to run away, to escape from anyone in this family-even her grandparents, who were the reason for her current situation. Nithya's mother, Sharadha, had her share of property given as dowry by her parents. This included 150 acres of farmland, a farmhouse, and a rice mill. Nithya was the sole heir to this property, and the revenue from this property is being deposited in her name by her grandparents. This was the main reason Adhitya's mother had accepted Nithya as her daughter-in-law.
Nithya sat on the bed, lost in her thoughts, tears flowing uncontrollably. She lay back down, determined that she would not be a maid for this family anymore, nor for her child. Closing her eyes, she drifted back to sleep, firm in her resolve.
Adhitya woke up at 7 AM, surprised to see Nithya sleeping beside him. Usually, she would be up and about by this time, tending to her duties. Worried, he touched her forehead to check her temperature, it felt normal. He thought she must be tired and sighed as he left for the bathroom to complete his morning routine.
Nithya woke to the sound of water running from the bathroom and glanced at the clock, it was 7:30. She knew she was late for breakfast, but she didn't care. As she sat there, staring at their wedding photo mounted on the wall, Adhitya emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. If it had been the old Nithya, she would have felt all fluttery and nervous seeing him like that, but now she felt nothing. Instead, she was filled with disgust for herself for carrying this man's child. She had never considered her baby a mistake, but now she realized that having a child with him was the biggest mistake she had ever made. As Adhitya came out of the bathroom, Nithya got up, walked to the wardrobe to grab her clothes, and headed to the bathroom to shower.
Adhitya went downstairs and saw his mother working in the kitchen. His grandmother was sitting on the couch, sipping tea, while his grandfather and father chatted. He joined them, waiting for his coffee, but after 15 minutes, he still hadn't received it. He called for his mother, who appeared with a cup, her sour expression indicating her displeasure at being made to cook that day.
Nithya came down after finishing her routine. As she entered, her grandmother asked, "Nithya dear, come here. How are you feeling now? You look so pale. Come, sit down and have breakfast." She took Nithya's wrist and made her sit beside her. Adhitya observed her keenly, her face looked tired and drawn. Guilt began to seep into him for his actions the previous night.
Nithya sat quietly next to her grandmother, who served her breakfast. However, she didn't touch the food, staring at her plate with an emotionless expression. Noticing her lack of appetite, her grandmother asked, "Nithya, what happened? Eat! What are you looking at? Don't you like the food?"
Nithya nodded her head and replied, "I want to leave."
