The rest of the train ride was shaky and anything but normal.
Y/n realized that all three boys had been frozen in fear when they spotted her outside their compartment and the dementor that was slowly creeping towards her. George had miraculously managed to snap out of his stupor just in time to pull Y/n out of the way of the dementor. She ignored the slight flush on her face at how close they were in proximity and turned around to hug him tightly as if her life depended on it and thank him. He insisted it wasn't a big deal and she let him even though they both knew it was.
Y/n returned to her compartment when the lights came back on after taking a few minutes to catch her breath and collect her thoughts, but George still insisted on walking her back to make sure she got there alright. Y/n didn't protest. She appreciated how much he was looking after and would never turn down more time with him. They didn't talk as they walked back. Y/n couldn't think of anything to say that wasn't about how warm his hands were or how beholden she was to him. So instead, she opted for silence.
George was in a similar position. His brain was struggling to produce any coherent thoughts when he could practically still feel how soft Y/n's lips had been against his hand and how the contours of her body had fit perfectly against his. The skin where they touched still tingled. He had been so horrified when he saw Y/n in the hallway and that thing creeping towards her. It made him think of when she was petrified last year and it hit him that he couldn't let her get hurt again.
He wouldn't let her get hurt again.
Before he knew what he was doing he had already grabbed her and pulled her out of the hallway.
All of Y/n's friends breathed a collective sigh of relief when Y/n returned to their compartment, but Lucy looked the most alleviated. She stood up and walked forward before practically tackling Y/n into a hug and holding her like if she let go she would disappear into thin air. Lucy's soft, but slightly calloused hands from years of playing piano held onto Y/n tightly before checking the girl for any signs of injury.
"I'm okay Lucy." Y/n reassures with a soft laugh. Lucy looked over Y/n's shoulder to where George was standing and her eyes softened. She silently mouthed the words 'thank you'. The two may not have been close friends themselves, but Lucy wasn't blind. She knew George cared deeply for Y/n even if Y/n herself wouldn't admit it. That was something that had bonded them.
When the train pulled to a stop for real this time, the students shuffled out of the train and towards the castle awkwardly. Y/n Granger was suddenly hit with a feeling of remorse for the poor first years whose first experience at Hogwarts had been a dementor stopping the train.
There were muffled whispers echoing throughout the great hall before the opening feast started. The tension in the room is thick and heavy. It's clear the abrupt stop and dementor appearance on the train was weighing heavy on everyone's mind. Y/n was walking to check on Hermione, Harry —who she heard fainted—, and Ron when she overheard a familiar sneer from the Slytherin table.
"Potter...Potter!" Draco whisper yells making Y/n roll her eyes and Harry, Ron, and Hermione turn around. None of them had noticed her presence yet.
"Is it true you fainted? I mean you actually fainted?" He taunts and his friends laugh.
Y/n Granger can't help the amused laugh that tumbles from her lips at this.
"I think you're just making excuses to talk to Harry now because I vividly remember you whimpering like a little kid when you saw the dementor." Y/n recalls with a raised eyebrow, still laughing.
Draco's pale face turns a little pink at this and he grumbles incoherent insults and denials before giving up and turning around. Both Granger girls just roll their eyes knowingly while Ron and Harry look confused, but pleasantly surprised.
