Y/n Granger was walking outside through the castle courtyard towards the North Tower just enjoying the early autumn air when she saw something peculiar.

She had finished her first two weeks of school and was set to meet Professor Trelawney. Y/n had greatly enjoyed her classes and particularly loved her Care for Magical Creatures class, Defense Against Dark Arts class, and Potions because she got to sit next to George. Aside from the few odd happenings like how her younger sister seemed to disappear and reappear in thin air within seconds everything was normal.

However, she was greatly troubled by the vision she had drawn early on. In the years past, her visions were more clear: a Basilik, a wall with a bloody warning, a troll, Hermione in danger. This drawing was entirely different. This was just a rat and...

a dog?

"Whose bloody dog is that?" Y/n mumbled to herself with her thoughts completely interrupted as her eyes caught on the black dog in the distance.

She didn't even know dogs were allowed at Hogwarts. She thought only rats, cats, frogs, and owls were allowed to be kept as pets, but sure as the sun there was a dog walking along the edges of the forbidden forest.

"Hey there," Y/n spoke softly as she approached the dog slowly as to not scare it.

At first the dog became skittish when it noticed she was there. The black dog started to skirt towards the Forbidden forest before Y/n stopped moving and raised her hands in a silent show of peace.

"It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you." Y/n reassures in a slow, even voice hoping if her words were gentle enough they would somehow go through to the animal.

The dog stops its frantic movements and pauses though its big dark grey eyes still look a little panicked. Y/n carefully approaches and starts to hesitantly reach a hand out so it rests just in the air in front of the dog's snout so it could sniff her hand. Y/n noticed as she moved closer that the dog had a long shaggy black fur that looked unkempt and a little matted down with dirt. The fur filled out the dog's figure a tad, but Y/n could tell from the thin look to their front and hind legs that they didn't have much weight on their bones. The dog apprehensively sniffed her hand before it seemingly accepted the smell of her and allowed her to move closer.

"Oh, you poor thing." Y/n cooed gently as her hand started to lightly stroke the dog's head who nuzzled into the touch ever so slightly. "Where's your owner?"

The dog's head tilted slightly at that and in some odd sense it almost looked offended at the idea of being owned by someone. It was a strangely human reaction and Y/n couldn't help but laugh softly in surprise at it. Sure enough, when she gently checked their neck for a collar she found nothing there.

"Do you want some food? You look like you're starving." Y/n commented while softly petting the dog that went back to rubbing back against the warm touch.

At the mention of food their tail started wagging like mad and she couldn't help but think it was very cute how excited they were and how the dog somehow seemed to understand her sentences and questions. She laughed quietly and looked through her bag for any sort of snacks before she found a slightly smushed granola bar, but she figured it would do for now. She broke off a small piece of it and fed it to the dog who sniffed it hesitantly before eagerly snapping it up and running its tongue over its snout to grab any fallen crumbs. Y/n continued like this till she had fed the dog the entire bar.

"Where have you been hiding huh?" Y/n asks the dog and pulls out her wand as she continues to pet the dog.

The black dog softly pushed against her hand as if to make the touch firmer. Y/n laughed and complied, petting the dog firmly but gently. She grabbed her wand and pointed it at the dog which seemed to spook it a little and they started to scramble.
