After returning from class, where Jisung kept complaining about Minho, I started to notice that Hyunjin was acting strangely. He had always been relaxed, but now there was something different about him. It started with little things—strange glances, as if he was hiding something. Then I noticed that Hyunjin was regularly leaving the classroom during breaks, and when asked about the party, he suddenly went quiet.

I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t want to confront it right away.

One day, during lunch, while sitting with Jisung, I decided to throw out a casual question:

“Hyunjin, is everything okay? You've been acting… differently for a while now.”

Hyunjin looked up as if he had been caught doing something he didn’t want to reveal.

“Differently? What do you mean?” he replied.

“Well, you know, ever since that party. It’s like something is bothering you, but you’re not saying anything.”

Jisung chimed in with a smile: “Maybe Minho caught his eye too?” he joked, trying to lighten the mood.

I rolled my eyes. “Seriously, Jisung, not everything revolves around Minho.”

Hyunjin was silent for a moment, then sighed, as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Finally, he said:

“It’s just… there are things I can’t tell you yet. But I promise it’s nothing serious.”

I furrowed my brows but decided not to press further.

We were sitting in the office at the station, and the atmosphere was tense. Minho, as usual, had his thoughts.

“Who are you talking about?” I asked, glancing at him.

“Jisung” Minho replied, shrugging.

“I could have guessed that” I smiled, unable to hold back a laugh. Jisung always drew attention, and Minho couldn’t resist mentioning him.

At that moment, our boss walked into the room. His expression didn’t promise anything good.

“I have important information for you” he began, and we immediately stopped laughing. “We found the girl. The water washed her body up by the lake.”

Minho looked at me in shock. “What time?”

“At three in the morning. We suspect murder” the boss replied, and I felt chills run down my spine.

“Didn’t you think she could have just drowned? After all, she might have been drunk after the party” I asked, trying to make sense of the situation.

The boss shook his head. “At first, we thought about that, but…” he paused for a moment, and we held our breath. “The victim has marks on her neck. Someone must have strangled her before throwing her into the lake.”

My heart started to race. I was beginning to see how serious this case had become.

We were called into the boss’s office. As soon as we entered, he began assigning tasks. At first, I didn’t suspect anything was wrong until those unfortunate words were spoken.

“I have a new case for you. Something serious. The other officers will handle the discussions at this school” the boss said, flipping through some files on the desk.

When I heard those words, I felt my insides boil. I wanted to go back to that school. I knew Jisung would be there, and now they were going to send some other officers? That was not going to happen. I quickly took matters into my own hands.

“Boss, we should be the ones going to that school” I said, trying to sound as professional as possible, even though I felt like I was losing control of the situation. “We started this case. We have the best insight.”

The boss didn’t even look up, still going through papers. He just said:

“Minho, this is not your job. You have other priorities.”

I gritted my teeth. I couldn’t just let this go. I turned to him again:

“Boss, we’ve been there from the beginning. Others have no idea about this case. I really believe we should handle it” I laid all my cards on the table. I knew this could end badly, but I had to try.

The silence in the office was awkward, and I felt Changbin's gaze on me, probably already thinking I had lost my mind. Finally, the boss sighed.

“Fine, you can do it” he said with clear fatigue. “But remember, Minho, I’m the one in charge here, not you. And don’t forget I can kick you out at any time.”

It was a warning. I knew I had to keep calm now. After leaving the office, Changbin immediately spoke up.

“What are you doing, man? Seriously, do you think the boss won’t fire you for this?” he asked, looking at me as if expecting me to admit my foolishness.

“Sometimes you have to stand your ground” I replied, giving a slight smile. Deep down, I knew I was risking it, but Jisung... was worth it.

When the teacher interrupted the lesson, I looked at her with concern.

“I would like to inform you that today the police will be back at our school. Each of you will have a chance to talk to them about the recent party” she said. Silence fell in the classroom, and students began exchanging nervous glances. The tension hung in the air.

The bell rang for a break, signaling the end of the lesson, and everyone rushed to the door. Jisung and I headed down the hallway when I suddenly spotted Hyunjin. He was standing a bit to the side, with a forced smile that seemed more uncertain than joyful.

“Hey, Hyunjin!” Jisung called out, but Hyunjin didn’t respond right away. His gaze was distant, as if he was thinking about something else.

I exchanged worried glances with Jisung. “Does he always act like this?” I asked in a whisper, feeling that something was off.

“No, he seems… strange” Jisung replied, moving closer. “What’s going on? Is everything okay?”

Hyunjin finally glanced at us, but his smile disappeared. “Yeah, everything’s fine” he replied, but I could hear a note of uncertainty in his voice.

I didn’t want to press him, but I felt that he was hiding something. The tension in the air was palpable, and Jisung and I sensed that our friend had something to conceal.
