JULIAN

I adjusted my tie, Sarah's gaze approving as we prepared for the novel event. Her eyes sparkled with excitement, and for a moment, I felt a pang of guilt.

"You look handsome," she said, her voice dripping with familiarity.

I forced a smile, the weight of my deception settling heavily on my shoulders.

The invitation had specified "partners welcome." I hadn't thought twice about bringing Sarah. It was a literary event, after all - not a social gathering where our personal lives would be scrutinized.

As we arrived at the venue, the literary world converged. Authors, publishers, and industry professionals mingled, exchanging stories and laughter. The air vibrated with creative energy.

Sarah's hand rested on my arm, a possessive gesture that made my skin prickle. We navigated through the crowd, exchanging nods and smiles with acquaintances.

And then, I saw her.

Lexi.

Radiant in a red dress, her hair styled in loose waves that cascaded down her back. Her eyes shone like stars, illuminating the room.

My heart stuttered.

What was she doing here?

Sarah followed my gaze, her eyes narrowing.

"Who's that?" she asked, her tone laced with curiosity.

I hesitated, my mind racing. How could I explain Lexi's presence?

"Just a colleague," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.

Lexi's eyes met mine, a spark of recognition. A flicker of surprise. And then, a hint of sadness.

She knew I was here with Sarah.

The room seemed to shrink, the air thickening with tension. I felt trapped, caught between two worlds.

Sarah's voice cut through the silence.

"Shall we mingle, darling?"

I nodded, my heart heavy with foreboding. This night would change everything.

As we navigated the crowd, I couldn't shake off Lexi's gaze. It lingered, a constant reminder of my deception.

We stopped at a group discussing the latest bestseller. Sarah chimed in, her opinions well-articulated. I stood beside her, my smile plastered on.

Lexi appeared beside me, her voice low.

"Julian."

My name on her lips sent shivers down my spine.

"Lexi," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.

The conversation swirled around us, but I was lost in her eyes.

Sarah's laughter echoed, a stark contrast to the tension between Lexi and me.

How long could I maintain this charade?
