Weeks passed, and Sarah's pregnancy progressed. I fulfilled my promise, keeping my relationship with Lexi private. But the weight of secrecy hung heavy, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was living a double life. Lexi understood, but I knew she felt the strain.
Then, Sarah's requests began to change. We met at a coffee shop, and she looked more vulnerable than I'd seen her in months. "Julian, I don't want Lexi around the kids," she said, her voice trembling. "At least, not until after the baby's born." I hesitated, feeling torn. I knew Lexi cared about the children, but Sarah's concerns seemed genuine.
"I understand," I replied finally. "But Lexi loves them, and they love her." Sarah's expression turned resolute. "Please, Julian. Just until after the baby's born." I nodded, knowing I had to find a balance between my love for Lexi and my responsibilities to Sarah and our children.
But as time passed, Sarah's demands increased. "No joint custody," she said during another tense meeting. "I want full custody of the children." My instincts flared. "We'll discuss it," I replied firmly. "But I won't agree to anything that harms the kids or Lexi." Sarah's eyes narrowed, her jaw clenched.
"You're choosing her over us, aren't you?" she spat. "You're putting your happiness above our well-being." I took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. "No, Sarah. I'm choosing happiness for everyone. I love Lexi, but I also love our children. And I'll do what's best for them, always."
Sarah's face fell, tears welling in her eyes. "I don't know if I can trust you." My heart ached, knowing our relationship had reached a breaking point.
