The crisp air of late autumn nipped at Y/n's cheeks as she, Agatha, and Rio made their way through the Westview Farmer's Market. It was a weekend tradition for the family to spend a few hours browsing the local stalls, but today felt special. The leaves had almost all fallen, leaving the trees bare against the gray November sky. The scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled cider filled the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of fresh vegetables and herbs. The market was alive with chatter, people bundled up in scarves and hats, their breath visible in the cool air as they shopped for the week ahead.
Y/n zipped up her jacket and tugged her scarf closer to her neck, looking up at her two moms. Rio, always eager to find the best produce, was scanning the various stalls with sharp eyes, her face lit up with excitement at discovering fresh ingredients. On the other hand, Agatha was more relaxed, her gaze wandering toward a stand in the far corner that Y/n knew housed a small collection of magical herbs-quietly and secretly sold only to those who knew what to look for.
"Alright," Rio said, her breath coming out in a puff of white. "Y/n, you're with me for a bit. We need to find some good vegetables, and I'm thinking maybe we can grab a few apples, too. They look like they're still in season."
Y/n nodded eagerly. "I'm on it."
Agatha raised an eyebrow, looking slightly amused. "And what am I supposed to do in the meantime?"
Rio flashed a grin, her brown eyes sparkling. "Oh, I don't know... why don't you go find yourself something magical to play with?"
Agatha's lips twitched into a smile, and she gave Rio a small, affectionate nudge with her elbow. "I'll be back in a bit. Try not to buy the whole market while I'm gone."
With that, Agatha wandered toward the witch's stand, where a row of potted plants, dried herbs, and spell ingredients awaited her. Y/n watched her go before turning to Rio, who was already moving toward a vegetable stall.
As they approached the vendor, Y/n could see the bright colors of squash, potatoes, and root vegetables laid out neatly. A basket of shiny apples sat nearby, their red and yellow skins glowing in the weak sunlight. Rio's hand immediately went to one of the apples, and she held it up, scrutinizing it before tossing Y/n a playful smile.
"Here's a tip," Rio said as she handed Y/n the apple, "you can always tell a good apple by its weight and how firm it feels. This one's perfect."
Y/n took the apple, pretending to weigh it in her hand as Rio had taught her years ago. She loved these little moments-where Rio's excitement for food was infectious, and the world around them seemed to slow down. It was normal, in the best way possible.
Rio, ever the charmer, turned to the vendor, her smile warm and inviting. "How much for these apples?"
The vendor, an older man bundled in a thick coat, eyed Rio momentarily before grinning. "For you? A discount. How about two dollars a pound instead of three?"
Rio beamed. "You've got a deal."
Y/n watched in awe, as always, at how easily her mom could negotiate without even trying. They picked out a few more apples and a variety of vegetables for soups and stews. After thanking the vendor, they moved on to the next stall, where Rio found some late-season pears and a bundle of fresh kale.
"Think this will make a good soup?" Rio asked, holding up the greens.
Y/n nodded, already picturing the warmth of the kitchen when they cooked later. "Yeah, with potatoes and carrots, maybe?"
"Exactly," Rio said, throwing an arm around Y/n's shoulders. "You've got a good eye for this."
They continued their stroll through the market, the sun hanging low in the sky, casting a golden hue over everything. The sense of community here always made Y/n feel at ease-everyone smiling, greeting each other warmly despite the chill in the air. There was something magical about how life in Westview flowed, even without the spells and enchantments that sometimes drifted through their days.
After a while, Y/n spotted Agatha near the witch's stand. She was holding a small, spiky plant in her hands, her fingers delicately brushing its leaves. Y/n couldn't help but be curious, so she gently tugged Rio in that direction.
"Look at Mama," Y/n said, pointing toward Agatha. "I wonder what she found."
Rio grinned, watching as Agatha examined the plant with a concentrated look on her face. "Let's go find out."
When they reached Agatha, she looked up, her blue eyes glinting with satisfaction. "Ah, there you are. I found something interesting for us."
Y/n peered over her mama's shoulder, eyeing the plant with intrigue. Its leaves were a deep green, and as Agatha lightly touched one, the plant seemed to shiver and curl inward, responding to her touch.
"What is it?" Y/n asked, fascinated.
Agatha smiled, her voice lowering as she explained, "It's called a Sensilis plant. It's extremely sensitive to touch and can be used in certain spells for detecting energy fields or magical auras. But..." she paused, her smile turning fond, "it's also just a fascinating little plant that reacts to emotions. If you're calm, it stays open. If you're anxious, it'll close up like it just did."
Y/n leaned in, gently brushing a fingertip against one of the leaves. The plant trembled again, but this time, it slowly unfurled its leaves as if welcoming her.
"Whoa," Y/n whispered, a grin spreading across her face. "That's amazing."
Rio chuckled from behind them. "Leave it to your mama to find the one plant in the market that's both magical and moody."
Agatha shot her wife a playful look. "You say that like it's a bad thing."
"Not at all," Rio said, stepping forward and touching Agatha's shoulders. "In fact, I think it's perfect for you."
Y/n watched them with a soft smile, feeling the warmth of their easy banter fill the space between them. It wasn't uncommon for her moms to tease each other like this, and she loved how their differences seemed to complement one another in the most unexpected ways.
"Alright," Agatha said, turning toward the vendor behind the witch's stand, "we'll take this one."
As they finished their shopping, the three of them wandered back through the market, arms full of bags. The sun had dipped lower, casting long shadows across the square, and the cold air nipped a little sharper at their noses. But the warmth between them, the shared laughter and gentle touches, kept them cozy as they returned home.
By the time they returned to their house, the kitchen smelled fresh herbs and vegetables, the fire in the living room crackling merrily in the hearth. Y/n helped Rio unpack the bags, setting out the apples and vegetables on the counter, while Agatha placed the Sensilis plant on the windowsill, where it could catch the morning sun.
As they began preparing dinner together, Y/n realized how seamlessly the magical and the mundane blended into their lives. A simple trip to the farmer's market had been filled with small moments of enchantment-whether it was Rio charming a vendor or Agatha sharing her love for magical plants. These moments shaped their family, the ones Y/n would always carry with her.
As the evening wore on, the three of them sat down at the table to enjoy a hearty stew, the rich flavors of fresh ingredients warming them from the inside out. Outside, the first few snowflakes of the season began to fall, dotting the ground with the promise of winter. Inside, Y/n felt nothing but warmth.
It was the perfect end to a perfectly magical day.
