Y/n's day at school had been ordinary, but her favorite part was walking Billy and Tommy home. She felt a fierce, protective instinct over them, ensuring they stayed out of trouble, even if they sometimes rolled their eyes at her fussing.
As they reached their house, Y/n stopped and gave each of them a quick goodbye hug. Wanda opened the door just as Y/n ensured the twins were safely inside.
"Thanks for walking them home," Wanda said, smiling warmly.
Y/n shrugged. "Of course! These two would trip over their own feet if left to their own devices," she teased.
Billy grinned. "She's just mad because I beat her at chess last week."
"Sure, Billy. Keep telling yourself that," Y/n shot back playfully, making them all laugh.
After a final wave, Y/n turned toward her house. As the sun dipped below the horizon, shadows lengthened across the quiet streets. She felt an odd chill, a creeping sensation at the back of her neck. She looked around but saw no one. Taking a deep breath to shake it off, she continued walking.
Just as she rounded the corner to her street, she stopped dead in her tracks. A tall, dark figure cloaked in shadows stood directly in her path.
The woman's face was cold and pale, with sharp eyes that seemed to glint with dark intent.
"Y/n," she said in a voice that felt like ice on her skin. "I've been waiting."
Y/n took a shaky step back, her heart pounding. "Who... who are you?"
The woman's lips curved in a predatory smile. "I am Evanora Harkness. Your grandmother."
Y/n felt her heart sink as a wave of fear washed over her. She'd heard whispers of Evanora, a powerful and dangerous witch from her mother's past, a figure Agatha spoke of only in passing and with a rare hint of fear.
"No... you can't be," Y/n stammered, trying to stand her ground despite the terror creeping up her spine.
"Oh, I am," Evanora replied coolly. "Agatha abandoned her family's legacy, and then she betrayed me. But now she has you." Her smile turned mocking. "Proof of her weakness."
Before Y/n could react, Evanora raised a hand, dark energy crackling from her fingertips and wrapping around Y/n like heavy chains. Pain shot through her, sharp and searing, as the magic bound her, cutting off her own powers. She gasped, struggling against the restraints, but they only tightened, sending an agonizing pulse through her body.
Back at home, Agatha was chopping vegetables for dinner in the kitchen. The simple, steady rhythm of slicing helped her feel centered, and she found herself smiling, thinking about how lucky she was to have Rio and Y/n with her again. They might not have it all figured out yet, but it was enough to be together.
Just as she reached for another vegetable, a sudden, excruciating pain tore through her chest. It felt like a dagger made of fire, cutting straight to her heart. Gasping, she dropped the knife with a loud clatter, doubling over as waves of pain coursed through her body, tears welling up from the shock of it.
Rio, who'd been reading in the living room, heard the crash and rushed into the kitchen, her face full of worry. She immediately rushed to Agatha's side, taking her by the shoulders.
"Agatha! What's wrong?" she asked, her voice thick with concern as she gently brushed away a tear slipping down Agatha's cheek.
Agatha clutched the edge of the counter, struggling to catch her breath. "It's... it's Y/n," she managed, her voice trembling. "Something's happened. I felt it - like she was being torn from me. Someone...I don't know who has her."
