The soft light in Y/n's new room cast gentle shadows across the walls, a warm glow creating a refuge from the coldness that had once defined her world. This space was connected to Agatha and Rio's room-a deliberate choice made by her mothers to give Y/n a sense of closeness, a tether to the love that waited for her just a few steps away. Agatha had added subtle protective enchantments around the room, a woven barrier of safety and calm. It wasn't just a room; it was a sanctuary for a young woman who had been denied peace for so long.
Y/n sat on the edge of the bed, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as if bracing against the invisible storm raging in her mind. Hydra's conditioning fought every soft word and tender gesture Agatha and Rio had shown her since she arrived. Her hands shook, and her gaze was fixed on the floor, her body rigid and unyielding.
Agatha approached her carefully, stopping a short distance away, allowing Y/n the space she seemed to need. Her heart broke, seeing the girl who was once her tiny, vulnerable newborn now a teenager, carrying the weight of battles Hydra had forced upon her.
"Y/n," Agatha's voice was soft and warm. "You're safe here, my love. This room, this space-it's yours. No one can hurt you anymore."
Y/n's head snapped up, eyes sharp with mistrust. "Safe?" she echoed, her voice low and bitter. "Do you really believe that? After everything... Hydra taught me that safety is an illusion." Her words were laced with a hollow resentment, a reflex born of years of manipulation.
Rio stepped forward, her gaze steady and unwavering. "It's okay to feel that way, Y/n. You've been through things no one should ever experience. But that doesn't mean we can't find a way to make you feel secure now. Hydra doesn't get to define what safety means for you anymore."
Y/n's fists clenched, her knuckles white. "You say that," she spat, a quiver in her voice betraying the anger that masked her fear, "but it's not that easy. Hydra took everything I was and twisted it, broke it. I don't... I don't even know who I am without them." The final words slipped out as a tremble, her carefully built walls crumbling, piece by piece.
Agatha felt a surge of sorrow mixed with a fierce resolve. She moved closer, carefully sitting beside Y/n, leaving enough space to let her feel in control. "I know, Y/n," she murmured, her voice soothing and unyielding. "But you're not alone in finding out who you are. We'll be here every step of the way."
Y/n's defenses wavered, but she shook her head stubbornly, her voice barely a whisper. "Why? Why do you care so much? You don't even know me... not really."
Rio knelt in front of her, her eyes filled with determination. "We care because you're ours, Y/n. You're our daughter, and no amount of time or distance can change that. Hydra might have tried to take you from us, but they can't erase what we feel. They can't erase how much we love you."
Y/n flinched at the word "love." Love was foreign, something Hydra had branded as weakness, a concept she'd been trained to disregard. She turned her head away, fighting the wave of emotion that threatened to surface, clinging to the last threads of her conditioning.
"You think love is enough to fix this?" Her voice cracked, the anger melting away to reveal the brokenness underneath. "I can't just... forget everything they made me do. Everything they made me believe."
Agatha reached out, her hand hovering momentarily before gently settling over Y/n's, offering comfort without demanding. "We're not asking you to forget," she said softly. "And we know it will take time, maybe a long time, for you to heal. But this love isn't something fragile, Y/n. It's not something that breaks because things are hard. It's a promise that we're not going anywhere."
Rio joined Agatha's hand, creating a bridge of warmth and strength between the three of them. "You're stronger than you realize," she added, her tone firm yet filled with encouragement. "I know Hydra taught you that strength comes from control and loyalty to them, but real strength? That comes from within. And it's not something anyone can take from you."
Y/n's shoulders trembled, her walls breaking down as she looked into her mother's face. The intensity of their love and commitment hit her, destabilizing the icy detachment Hydra had forged within her. She felt a pang, an ache for something she couldn't fully understand but craved all the same. The belief, the warmth, the softness in their gazes-it was something she'd never known. But the longing for it pulsed deep within her, frightening and magnetic all at once.
"But how do I know it's real?" she whispered, barely audible. "How do I know you won't disappear... like everything else?"
Agatha felt tears prick her eyes, and her voice shook as she replied, "Because we've already waited for you, Y/n. For years, we waited, searched, hoped... every single day. You were taken from us, but we never stopped loving you, and we never will."
A tear slipped down Y/n's cheek, a silent admission of the battle waging within her. Part of her wanted to believe them, to let herself trust in this bond she barely understood. But doubt clawed at her mind, a constant whisper that warned her against letting her guard down.
Rio's hand tightened gently, anchoring her. "You don't have to decide everything today, Y/n," she said quietly. "Just know that we're here, and we'll always be here, ready whenever you are."
Y/n looked down at their hands over hers, and something cracked within her. She felt a surge of something unfamiliar, something that wasn't tied to pain or fear. It was small, almost fragile, but it was there-a glimmer of trust, a glimmer of hope.
"I don't... I don't know if I can do this," she choked out, her voice thick with emotion. "But... I want to try."
Agatha pulled her into a gentle embrace, wrapping her arms around her daughter, holding her as if anchoring her to this newfound hope. "That's all we ask, Y/n. We'll take it one day at a time. Together."
For the first time, Y/n allowed herself to rest against her mothers, letting the warmth of their presence surround her. Her old identity, the one Hydra had imposed, felt smaller and weaker as if it was losing its hold. As she leaned into their embrace, her heart began to crack open, letting in the love that had been waiting for her all along.
