The morning sun spilled into Y/n's room, casting a golden glow across her bed as she slowly blinked awake. Today was special. It was her 17th birthday, and even though birthdays weren't usually a big deal for her, this year felt different. She stretched, smiling as she thought about the day ahead-one that her mothers, Agatha and Rio, had been eagerly preparing for.
Downstairs, the house was already buzzing with magic. The aroma of freshly baked cake mixed with the hum of enchanted decorations, which were floating and dancing their way through the living room. Y/n could hear the occasional laugh from Rio and the sharp, focused tones of Agatha as they worked together-but in their own ways-to create the perfect birthday surprise.
Y/n padded downstairs, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, and was immediately greeted by the sight of a balloon bouncing toward her, trailing glittering sparks of magic. She caught it with a laugh. "Okay, this is new."
Agatha appeared from the kitchen, her sleeves rolled up and a mischievous smile on her face. "Good morning, birthday girl," she said, crossing the room to give Y/n a kiss on the forehead. "We've got some surprises for you."
Rio followed behind, balancing a tray of waffles topped with whipped cream and sprinkles, looking pleased with herself. "Happy birthday, baby!" she said, setting the tray down on the dining table. "We thought you deserved something extra special today."
Y/n's heart warmed at the sight of her moms working together, even if it meant chaos. They had both been planning something all week, though she knew their styles were vastly different-Agatha was all about precision and tradition, while Rio leaned into spontaneity and fun. The mix of their energies often made things... interesting.
"Are those enchanted streamers?" Y/n asked, pointing to the decorations that twirled in the air, wrapping themselves around the walls in random bursts of color.
"Agatha insisted," Rio said with a wink.
"They add a touch of elegance," Agatha retorted, though even she couldn't hide the glimmer of pride in her eyes.
After breakfast, Y/n was led into the living room, where more decorations floated and glittered around them. Agatha waved her hand, and the lights dimmed as soft, shimmering candles appeared, filling the air with a calming lavender scent.
And then, of course, came the cake.
Agatha had meticulously crafted a three-tiered masterpiece covered in delicate silver and blue icing that sparkled with magic. But as soon as she set it down on the table, Rio, being Rio, decided to add her own magical flair.
With a flick of her wrist, the cake began to hover, spinning slowly in the air. It was supposed to be a fun, gravity-defying trick. But something went wrong.
Instead of gracefully floating in place, the cake shot upward like a rocket, spinning out of control.
"Uh, Rio?" Agatha said, her calm exterior starting to crack as the cake zoomed around the room. "I think you've overdone it!"
"I didn't mean to!" Rio said, laughing even as she tried to gain control of the wayward cake.
Y/n couldn't help but burst into laughter as she watched her moms frantically chase the flying dessert. "This is the best birthday ever already!" she shouted, clutching her sides.
After a few failed attempts, Agatha finally caught the cake with a burst of magic, lowering it-mostly intact-onto the table. A few stray bits of frosting hit the walls, but no one seemed to mind.
"Happy birthday," Agatha said, slightly breathless but grinning.
Y/n stepped forward, beaming as she took in the sight of her moms, messy from frosting and still laughing from the chaos. "You two are ridiculous," she said fondly.
"Only for you," Rio replied, brushing a bit of cake from her shoulder.
As they cleaned up the cake disaster, the afternoon rolled into gift time. Agatha and Rio had both prepared something unique for Y/n, each reflective of their personalities.
Agatha handed Y/n a beautifully wrapped box, the paper shimmering with magical runes. "This," Agatha said softly, "is something that belonged to your grandmother. It's been passed down through our family for generations."
Inside was an intricate locket, silver with sapphire inlays. When Y/n opened it, a soft glow emerged, and she felt warmth fill her heart. "It's enchanted," Agatha explained. "It will protect you, always."
Y/n's eyes filled with tears as she hugged her mother. "Thank you, Mommy," she whispered, deeply touched.
Next, it was Rio's turn. She handed Y/n a small, plain envelope, her grin playful. "This one's a little different."
Y/n opened it, pulling out two tickets to an upcoming concert for her favorite band. Her eyes widened. "No way!"
"Way," Rio said with a smirk. "You and Peter can go together if you want. Consider it a night out from us."
Y/n laughed, feeling overwhelmed by the love and effort both of her mothers had put into making her day perfect. Even the flying cake incident felt like part of the magic.
As the evening settled in, Y/n found herself surrounded by the people she loved most, and though the day had been filled with chaotic magical mishaps, it had also been filled with joy, laughter, and love.
By the time the candles were lit on the (fixed) cake, the room quieted. Y/n stood up, looking at Agatha and Rio with a soft, heartfelt smile. "Before I blow these out, I just want to say something," she began.
Her mothers exchanged a glance, both surprised and curious.
"I know we haven't always had the most normal life," Y/n continued, her voice thick with emotion. "And I know we missed a lot of time together because of everything that happened. But... I'm really, really lucky to have both of you. You've made my life so much better. And today-chaos and all-was perfect. So, thank you."
Agatha's eyes shimmered with unshed tears, and even Rio, who was usually the more carefree of the two, looked like she was holding back her emotions.
Y/n took a deep breath, made her wish, and blew out the candles, the warm glow of the flames disappearing into the air.
Agatha and Rio wrapped their arms around her in a tight hug, and for a moment, everything felt right in the world. They might not have had a perfect past, but they were building something beautiful now-together.
As the night wound down and the house grew quiet, Y/n lay in bed thinking about how far they had all come. From her mom's love to the new memories they were making together, she knew this was just the beginning.
Her 17th birthday wasn't just a celebration of another year-it was a celebration of the family they had become.
And that, Y/n thought as she drifted off to sleep, was the best birthday wish she could ever have come true.
