Preston was surprised at the golden wolf's actions. He was used to being respected by other wolves, but Lachlan clearly had had some traumatic experiences in his life to be this submissive.

Lachlan whimpered, and Rob was the one to rush to his side. The blue wolf rubbed against him, ruffling his fur, before noticing the chain around his neck.

"Lachlan, why is this here?" he asked, sniffing the cool metal. Lachlan sighed, and spoke in little more then a pained whisper.

"I come from a pack that's not like you guys. The alpha is an absolute ruler, and the betas are pretty much the ones who carry out his dirty work. I was a beta in the pack, but the alpha was disgusted by my ugly fur." All three of the listening wolves gasped.

"He thought your fur was ugly?" Jerome asked, astonished.

"But it's so... so beautiful!" Rob finished the bacca's sentence. Lachlan's eyes widened, and he looked back as if to make sure his pelage hadn't magically changed colors.

"I- Really?" He said, surprised. The three nodded kindly. Lachlan came as close as a wolf could to blushing.

"um... Thanks. No one's ever said that to me before. Everyone in my pack hated it, and the alpha would force me to stand still in the middle of our central clearing nearly every day, and he and all the betas would scratch and bite me. He told them to stain my ugly fur with the red of my own blood. I ran away, many times, but they always found me, and one day the alpha decided to put a chain around my neck, and cuffs on my forepaws. He had the Betas lift the huge boulder that served as his den, and put the end of the chain under it. That way everyone could beat me whenever they wanted, and I couldn't escape.

"A couple weeks ago, the pack elders told the alpha that he had to choose a mate from among the betas, or else another leader would replace him. He- he chose me, only because that way he could have me all to himself. He switched the chain so I was locked inside his den, and he would spend his days trying to bring me pain. He would stick porcupine quills in my side and force me to lie down, or squeeze poison berry juice into my eyes. Once, he got the betas to lift the den again, and made me put my tail and legs underneath it before they set it back down." Lachlan broke down abruptly in tears. His story was unlike any the other three had heard before, such cruelty and pure evil having been a near myth.

Preston could feel heat rising in his heart, a passion for vengeance filling his body. No one should ever have to go through that, especially not a wolf as perfect as this one. His eyes burned with fire and his claws were out. He growled slightly and stepped toward Lachlan, who gasped quietly in fear.

The alpha looked furious as he approached the Gold, and Lachlan could only hold his breath and hope that the alpha wouldn't maul him too much. He was expecting anything but what Preston did. The Lava Wolf buried his muzzle in Lachlan's fur, his ear against the gold's quickly beating heart.

"Whoever hurt you, " he spoke into Lachlan's thick coat. "If I find them, I will make them suffer for what they did to you." Lachlan let out a shaky pent-up breath and purred slightly. Jerome and Rob watched, shoulder to shoulder, their legs wrapping around each other's, making them impossibly close. They looked at each other. Both knew when Preston truly meant something, and they could tell how serious he was about his oath.

With an unspoken connection, each stepped foreword toward Lachlan and Preston. Rob nuzzled the chain around the gold's neck, before wrapping his fangs around it. Lachlan looked down at him quickly, in time to see the Blue's jaw tighten, and the metal crack under his force.

Lachlan could feel the heavy chain fall to the ground, making him unconsciously hold his head higher. For the first time in his life, Lachlan felt free, more so when Jerome slashed his claws over the hinges on his cuffs, breaking their hold on his forelegs, and on his life.

"I-" He stuttered out, before purring a "Thank you" at the three wolves now cuddling up to his tall form. Jerome was the first to leave the comfortable position, backing up and facing the gold.

"Why were you in the woods this morning? And who were the green wolves?" he wondered aloud. The other two wolves backed up as well, in order to hear his answer.

"The pack would use me as a messenger sometimes, because of my long legs. I could run fast, you know? I was on a mission to send my 'services' to Vik." He gestured to the pup-sized wolf that was now unconscious from his attack in his effort to save Preston and Rob.

"That wolf is a fighter from the SidePack, although he never enjoyed fighting." Preston, Rob and Jerome looked grim. Everyone had heard of the SidePack. They were a renowned wolf pack that trained wolves to fight champions from other packs, for the entertainment of anyone who came to watch. It was a sick business, and wolves like Preston, Jerome, and Rob despised anyone who enjoyed watching their own pack members maul each other to death.

"Vik was born tiny, no one knows why. He was banished from his birth-pack for his size, but Josh of the SidePack found him, and took him in. They gave him food and shelter, and in turn trained him to be a ferocious warrior. My pack would always bet on Vik, since he is one of the best fighters in the world, and in an effort to make him win, they would pretty much lend me to the SidePack every time he fought. I've become pretty close friends with Vik, since I was the only one who would accept him for not being a bloodthirsty killer like the other fighting wolves. Today Vik told me that he was going up Ali, the strongest fighting wolf known. Since he was unsure of his victory, he cut my chain and said that if I heard him howl from the arena, which was about 30 tree-lengths away, I would run away as fast as my legs could carry me."

"He lost." A new voice carried across the clearing. The four wolves looked over to the sound, in time to see the red and black wolf rise unsteadily to his feet. He clearly wasn't a threat, since he was still wobbly from Preston's attack.
