Jerome woke up with a start. he had been warm, content, but something had roused him from sleep. He slid free of his mates and stood shakily. Dew drops had collected on the half of him that had been exposed to the sky, sticking his cocoa colored fur to his slim body and darkening it to an almost black. Jerome padded away from Preston and Rob, shaking his fur when he was far enough away not to hit them with the spray. cocking his ears, he strained to figure out the sound that had caused him to wake up. In seconds he heard it. small scuffles were distinguishable from the bird songs and other noises of morning. with one look back at the two other wolves, The bacca skittered into the trees.

Jerome slowed to a guarded silent walk as the sounds got louder, now occasionally mixed in with a whimper or a growl here or there. His fur stood on end as he neared the noises until he saw something that almost made him recoil with fear.

There were six wolves in the clearing. Five were a deep green, with curled lips and slitted eyes. Their fur was covered with blood, dirt, and mud, and their claws were honed to sharp points. The sixth wolf was golden. Jerome nearly gasped out loud when he laid eyes on him. The wolf had the brightest pelt he had ever seen. It reflected the sun, or, quite possibly, the sun reflected the dazzling fur. His eyes were as blue as Rob's pelage, and he had streaks of fiery red fur crawling up his abdomen. Not only that, the wolf had the longest legs Jerome had ever seen. When the bacca-wolf escaped his tranced stupor, his eyes were drawn back to the current situation.

The five green wolves had the Gold surrounded, and started taking alternate swings at him with their claws. Gold whimpered, tail tucked between his legs, and ears flat against his forehead. The greens continued to scratch at Gold until one scored the winning stroke, slashing a foreclaw across his side, causing Gold to whimper loudly and collapse, his legs tucked underneath him, his tail hidden under them, and his head looking directly towards the ground. Jerome was in shock. Tears blurred his vision, but there was nothing he could do. One of the greens spoke.

"The Alpha expects you at noon. Don't get there in time, and there will be hell to pay." he smirked, and then scampered into the woods, followed by his four comrades. When Jerome felt it was safe, he spun his head to each side, turning his ears to hear anyone approaching, and, when the coast was clear, bounded towards the injured Gold.

When he reached him, the gold jumped back, his eyes afraid. He clenched his teeth in order to prevent any sounds of pain, but he couldn't prevent the small groan that escaped his lips when he stood. Jerome's eyes widened as he noticed metal shackles binding the Gold's paws. He tried to walk towards the wolf, but Gold pranced backwards, still light on his feet (probably because of his long legs), but obviously the exercise was causing him pain, so Jerome stopped abruptly and tried a different tactic.

"I'm not gonna hurt you," the chocolate wolf said soothingly.

"My name's Jerome. What's yours?"

Gold trembled, but just when the bacca wolf thought that he was ignoring the question, Gold responded, in a small stuttery whimper,

"I- I'm L-Lachlan." Jerome smiled at the wolf, and tried to advance again, this time putting his tail down to symbolize submission, and his ears down to represent defeat. Lachlan let him approach slowly, bracing his feet against the ground in order to boost his willpower. When Jerome was close enough to the other wolf, he cautiously nuzzled his head into Lachlan's neck. Lachlan jumped back, but landed badly on his left foreleg, which had been scratched in the Green wolves' attack, and collapsed into a semi-crouch.

Jerome let out a worried gasp and ran to Lachlan's side, using his muscled back to support the wolf. Lachlan accepted the help graciously and leaned on the cacao wolf.

"Lachlan?" Jerome asked, softly.

"hmm?" The gold wolf replied in an equally weak voice. "My mates are in a clearing about 20 tree-lengths West of here. They are very kind and gentle. May I take you to go see them?" Lachlan looked confused.

"you have two?" He asked, puzzled, and Jerome nodded, looking dreamily at the sky through the tree canopy.

"yeah. My first mate is Preston. He's so strong. He protects me from any harm, on the surface or in my head. He's dominant, cause he was an alpha in his old pack, but he uses his power to keep me and Rob safe. Rob is the other one. he's so sweet and timid, and he loves flowers. And his eyes are so beautiful you can just get lost in them- OH!!!!" Jerome jerked up, careful not to hurt Lachlan, and stared fearfully at the Gold, his ears down awkwardly.

"I'm sorry if you think it's weird that we're all guys..." Lachlan cuts him off abruptly, dramatically shaking his head, from which Jerome could hear the jangle of chains.

"no! No! Of course that doesn't matter to me, in fact, that is me! I just-" he trails off. Jerome grins at him and his eyes brighten.

"well then let's go see my pack!!!"
