"Thanks, by the way." He said, nodding toward Preston. "You could have killed me if ya wanted to. Nice to know that there's at least one decent alpha in this world."
Preston nodded in acknowledgement.
"It's against my values to harm another wolf without first knowing why they attacked me. I assume you have good reason for what you did." He sounded powerful, and full of authority.
"May be against your values to harm another wolf, but damn. My head is killing me. I'm Mitch, by the way" He let out a gravelly laugh, wincing at the pain of his headache. His laugh was good-natured and showed no sense of malice. Preston's face went from calm and powerful to one of humor as he laughed alongside the wolf.
"Sorry 'bout that" He said sheepishly, but Mitch merely waved him off with a shake of his neck, and pressed his paw into the ground, unearthing what looked like a white flower. He promptly picked it up with his mouth and swallowed it whole, much to the surprise of the four onlookers. Rob gasped slightly in shock and a little bit of anger. The checkered wolf noticed their puzzled reactions and grinned.
"Don't worry. It wasn't poisonous, just a feverfew flower. It heals headaches. I'm a medicine-wolf." He said proudly. He was nothing like the Medicine wolves that the others had seen, who were old and grey and covered in beaded necklaces and leaf-crowns. This wolf was young and energetic.
"I'm skilled in the art of making wolves not d-e-d! Oh, and I can fix those." He pointed at Lachlan's open injuries.
"Later," Lachlan said firmly, even though his wounds were clearly severe, and causing him a lot of pain. "I'm used to these. First, tell us your story." Mitch sighed, his face turning dark.
"Vik, as you said, was a fighter in the SidePack, along with his five friends, Simon, Josh, Harry, Tobi, and Ethan. They were all fighters, but more like family than friends. If one of them got hurt in battle, the others would most often carry him to my den on their backs. They had known about Vik's fight for a while, knew that he had no chance against the great Ali-A. Vik's friends tried to encourage him to run away, since losing would bring shame to their alpha, a wolf called Olajide, or JJ. They all knew that a champion who lost a fight would be beaten, nearly to death, for dishonoring the pack.
Vik refused to run away, for one reason. Him." He pointed at Lachlan, and then looked over at Vik, to make sure he was still unconscious, before continuing in a lower voice.
"Vik would kill me if he heard me say this, but he's always loved Lachlan. He would come to my den at midnight some nights and just talk for hours on end about how Lachlan's coat was as bright as the sun, and when he ran, it was as if the stars were dancing through his fur." Lachlan was blushing madly at this point, or would have been, had he not been a wolf. He buried his head in the fur of his chest, ducking his head to do so.
"Vik wouldn't leave the pack, since he knew that the others would hurt Lachlan, either from blaming him, or just because they wanted something to take their anger out on. So he stayed, knowing that he had one chance to free Lachlan if he lost, and he took that chance."
"That's... that's so noble of him. Little Vikky actually cares about me?" Lachlan was amazed.
"I guess it's out now. No more late nights venting in your den Mitch." The wolves looked over to see Vik, more sure on his feet then his checkered friend, padding lightly over to stand next to Mitch, looking embarrassed.
"Vik!" Lachlan exclaimed, attempting to run to the Red-and-blue wolf. Halfway, however, his front paw, which had been injured by the green wolves earlier, gave out and he fell foreword. Vik ran toward the taller wolf, reaching him just in time to catch him and lend a shoulder for Lachlan to lean on.
"Easy there mate. I gotcha." He murmured. Lachlan stood up shakily, favoring his wounded paw, and faced Vik, staring into his coffee colored eyes. Vik looked away, shyly, but the Gold put his injured paw on the other's face, turning it back towards him. Vik sighed.
"Lachlan, I-" he was cut off by the nose of the gold pressing against his own, in a clear sign of pure love. Vik nearly recoiled from shock, but caught himself in time to melt into the touch.
Rob smiled to himself. The height difference between the two was huge, but adorable in its own way, considering that Lachlan, who was many heads taller than Vik, was clearly more submissive. Rob unconsciously pressed against Preston's shoulder, admiring the relationship of the Fighter and the Gold, while basking in the warmth of his own mate. Jerome stepped closer to his other side, squeezing him between his two lovers.
The sun shined down on the clearing, emphasizing the couple in the center. As if by an unspoken command, Lachlan and Vik both stood up on their hind legs, facing each other, and slid their forepaws onto the opposite's shoulders. It was a scene of epic adorability for the group, but Rob sensed something amiss, searching for it before seeing the source. Mitch was alone. He was watching on, his eyes showing delightedness for his friend's newfound love, but also wistfulness at the empty space beside him, that only a true love could fill.
Rob nudged Preston, and nodded his head toward the lonely wolf. Preston, understanding immediately what he meant, nodded and stepped to the side, letting the blue wolf out of his embrace. Rob scurried along the side of the clearing, before padding up to Mitch and standing next to him, leaning against his warm side. The checkered wolf's breath hitched as he felt a presence beside him. Purring lightly, Rob stuffed his face in Mitch's long fur, seeking to soothe his scattered heartbeat. Mitch cocked his head inquisitively at Preston, who nodded, his eyes smiling.
Mitch, after clearly being given the alpha's approval, laid his head over Rob's, pulling the Blue closer to him.
This, Rob thought to himself, was perfect.
