There was none of the usual warm yellow glow surrounding the window that morning. Instead, a cold whiteness provided an alternative light. Vik stepped up on his tip-toes, peeking through the glass, his breaths fogging up the frame and his fingers leaving smudged prints.

He grinned, turning to race into the kitchen. School had been canceled because of a sudden snowstorm, and the entire Sidemen family was gathered in the kitchen, sipping mugs of hot chocolate or coffee or tea.

"Can we pleeeeease go outside now?" Vik asked, not for remotely the first time that day. In fact, there hadn't been an hour not filled by his complaints and hyperactive jumping.

"I'm ready." Said Harry, slamming his cocoa down a bit to harshly on the wooden table and rushing to Vik, touching his shoulder and bounding away with screams of "You're it! Race you to get dressed!"

Of course no one had gotten changed out of their pajamas yet, and none were inclined to. Vik bolted after Harry, both clumsily pulling their puffy snow pants over their fuzzy pjs and buttoning their jackets as quickly as their now mittened fingers would allow.

Simon and Ethan, though equally excited, took more time to finish their drinks and put on their winter attire, and the four youngest boys were already halfway through a snowman when the three oldest joined them.

Ethan was the first to feel it; a cold wet slosh against the exposed back of his neck. He cringed and turned, glaring playfully at Simon, who simply looked back at him and stuck his tongue out.

This meant war.

Ethan ran at Simon, leaning down to pick up a wad of the thick white powder as he sprinted, roughly forming it into a ball. Simon's eyes widened and he turned on his heel, shrieking and doubling back around, right out of Ethan's reach.

"Josh Help!" He cried in feigned fear, and hid behind his eldest brother. Josh laughed and formed a snowball of his own, raising his arm to shoot, but another voice made him pause.

"I got you Eth!" Tobi shouted while laughing, sending a perfectly aimed snowball at Josh. The oldest stumbled backwards as the projectile smacked him directly in the face. Simon yelped again, ducking as another ball was hurled past his head. He tripped backwards, falling into the snow, and stared up at the sky, until something impeded his sight.

"Hello!" Vik said. Simon imagined he would be smiling, but the older couldn't tell through the gigantic snow-boulder the younger boy was holding directly above his head. He screamed again through chuckles, but his noise was cut off as he was buried under the mound of snow.

"Oh no you don't!" Vik turned around to see his dad advancing on him in an attacking stance. The boy squealed in laughter, and JJ tackled him gently, tickling him. Jide grabbed Vik like a battering ram and shoved him face first into the pile of snow Simon was still inhibiting. Simon groaned at the weight, and Vik groaned at the cold, but both groans were muffled by mouthfuls of snow.

"Hey dad! Think fast!" Jide whipped around to see Harry running full speed down the hill at him, a giant curling ball of snow rolling down behind him of its own accord. Harry leapt out of the way, and it was JJ's turn to yell as the snow bore down on him, covering him head to toe.

Everyone was attacking everyone. The teams that had made sense in the beginning were now just a jumbled mess of truces, alliances and vengeance. It didn't feel like long before the sun was casting the orangey-pink light of twilight on the snow, and the family was gasping for air and lying tiredly in the snow. The air was crisp and almost empty of white noise, as it sometimes is when snow coats the ground high enough. They were tired, worn out, exausted.

But every Sideman was smiling.
