I thought it was a dream.
A strange dream but a dream nonetheless.
I blinked, the events of last night playing through my mind like a blurry movie reel. The bridge, the argument, the man on the edge—it all seemed so surreal.
Then I felt the car move beneath me.
I bolted upright, the cold leather of the backseat stinging my cheek. The sun was rising, casting a soft pink glow over the landscape as it peeked over the horizon. The man, the one from the bridge, was in the driver's seat, his eyes on the road ahead.
He glanced at me through the rearview mirror, only framing his eyes. In the new light I could see that they were a beautiful shade of green. Like light watercolor gray, blue, and green had all been blended together.
"Where are we?" I croaked, my voice hoarse.
"Good morning to you too, sunshine," he said without taking his eyes off the road.
I sighed and leaned back into the seat, the leather cold against my neck. I felt a twinge of anxiety, but the excitement of the unknown was stronger. I had never done anything like this before, never gone anywhere without a plan or permission. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
I studied him in the mirror. He was handsome, with a sharp jaw and those piercing eyes. His dark hair was a mess, but it suited him.
"How long have you been driving?" I asked, my voice still groggy from sleep.
"Well, when you almost passed out at the steering wheel, I thought it was a good time to take over." He said, a smirk playing on his lips.
I blinked again, looking around the car. Sure enough, we were on the open road, the sun just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a warm glow over the man's face. He looked tired, with dark circles under his eyes.
I sat properly, pushing my hair out of my face. "Why didn't you wake me up?"
He shrugged. "You looked like you needed it. Plus, I didn't exactly trust you to stay conscious while I slept."
I couldn't argue with that. I had been known to drive like a maniac when I was tired. But the reality of the situation was slowly setting in. I had run away with a complete stranger.
I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and took in our surroundings. We were on the highway, the scenery blurring by as we sped away from my old life. The sun grew brighter, painting the sky with streaks of orange and yellow. It was beautiful, but the sight did little to ease the weight on my chest.
