"Ishika, ever since you became chubby, you've only worn knee-length kurtis. So, what's with this night suit?" Sneha asked, noticing Ishika in her nightwear for the first time.
"He gave it to me so I could sleep comfortably at night," Ishika replied.
"Okay," Sneha said with a smile, adjusting her pillow.
"You remember, Mom?"
"Hmm?"
"Before the wedding, our relatives said my future husband would not keep me in the house because of how I look"
Sneha nods her head.
"They said he'd never love me, that he'd treat me like a servant in his home. They said so many hurtful things."
Sneha nods her head again.
"But look, Mom, that didn't happen. Kumar says he loves me," Ishika said.
Sneha smiled.
"Kumar has never once commented on my dark skin, my chubbiness, or even my stretch marks," Ishika continued, her eyes moistening a little.
"I feel so lucky to have a husband like him."
"Yes, Ishika," Sneha said, lovingly patting her head.
They both lay back down on the bed. Sneha quickly fell asleep, but Ishika couldn't sleep. Want to know why? Yes, you guessed it. She wanted to see him.
She quietly got up, went out of the bedroom under the pretense of filling her water bottle, and softly whispered to herself, "Kumar said he'd sleep in the other bedroom, but he fell asleep on the sofa in the living room."
First, Ishika filled her water bottle and put it on the table. Then she walked over to Ujjwal, sitting down beside him on the floor.
She gazed at his face for a few moments. A few strands of his hair had fallen onto his forehead, so she gently brushed them aside.
"I'm not upset with you, okay?" she whispered, lightly caressing his head.
"You know, Kumar, I was only upset for about 30 seconds, and then the anger just melted away," she said, gently massaging his head to help him relax.
"I really couldn't stay mad at you for longer than that," she whispered, laying her head on his chest and tracing small circles with her finger.
Planting a soft kiss on his chest, she said "It feels so good to be close to you, Kumar".
She closed her eyes.
"You know, when I'm in the kitchen cooking, I always think you'll come up behind me and hug me, and that's exactly what you did today," she whispered, eyes still closed, giving his chest another soft kiss.
"I just want to kiss you again and again. I control myself a lot, but do you know how hard it is?"
Ishika gently hugged him. "There's a special comfort in your arms."
"Thank you, Kumar, for never making fun of my chubbiness or my dark skin like everyone else does," she whispered.
For a while, Ishika lay there with her eyes closed, resting her head on his chest.
"That day, too, while I was cooking, I kept looking for you, hoping you'd be at the dining table. And then I accidentally cut my fingers-"
"And the way you took care of me, Kumar, it filled my heart. You even fed me with your own hands," she murmured.
She opened her eyes and said, "I love you, Kumar."
She placed a soft kiss on her fingertips and then gently touched his cheek.
Her head still resting on his chest, she began to notice that, with each of her words, his heartbeat seemed to change rhythm. She started to wonder if he was awake. To be sure, she lifted her head from his chest and asked, "Are you awake, Kumar?"
Ujjwal opened his eyes, and Ishika was startled, thinking he had been awake all along and heard her heartfelt words.
"Did you hear everything I said?"
Ujjwal nodded.
"I'm not talking to you anymore, I'm mad at you," Ishika said, turning away from him.
Her chubby cheeks puffed up in mock anger, and Ujjwal found this absolutely adorable.
"Can you stay mad at me for more than 30 seconds, Ishika?"
She nodded, pretending to be serious.
Ujjwal got up from the sofa and sat down beside her. Instantly, she turned her face in the opposite direction, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Last time, too, you were awake when I thought you were sleeping," she grumbled, pouting.
"But if I were sleeping, how would I know how much my wife loves me, hmm?"
Ujjwal gave her a side hug and placed a gentle kiss on her puffed-up, pouty cheek, holding it there for a moment.
"Still mad?"
"Yes," Ishika lied.
"What should I do now?"
"Say to me that I will never leave you," Ishika said, glancing at him.
"You will never leave me," Ujjwal repeated playfully.
Ishika placed a hand on her forehead, exasperated.
"No, say it like this: 'I will never leave you, Ishika.'"
"I will never leave you, Ishika."
"Are you still mad?" he asked.
"What do you think?"
"Judging by your chubby, puffed-up cheeks, I'd say you're still mad," he said, leaning back and resting his head on the sofa.
Hearing this, Ishika couldn't hold back her laughter. She leaned closer to him, resting her head on his chest, hugging him tightly.
After a while, Ujjwal said, "It hurt to hear what people said to you about your dark skin and chubbiness."
Ishika lifted her head to look into his eyes. Ujjwal gently kissed her on the forehead.
"They said a lot, Kumar. So many things," she said, her voice heavy with sadness, her eyes moist.
"But you never looked down on me, Kumar."
Ujjwal softly stroked her back. "You're so kind, caring, humble, and beautiful, Ishika. Try to forget their words."
"I try, Kumar, but it's hard," she said
Remembering how her relatives had said her future husband wouldn't even want to share a bed with her.
she asked, lowering her eyes, "Do you feel any sexual attraction toward me?"
"Yes, Ishika."
"Really?"
"Yes. Remember that day I was lying in your lap while you were watching TV? And I was under your kurti and gave you all those love bites on your beautiful belly."
Ishika brought her lips close to his, closed her eyes, and kissed him, and Ujjwal kissed her back.
He gently wiped the tear that had fallen down her cheek.
