Song: Words Fail from Dear Evan Hansen
A/N: Hi everyone! Sorry this is late I had a lot of homework the past couple days. Anyways please enjoy the next chapter of 8 Days, 8 Letters!
Present Day: July 1899
Jack's POV
I walked up the stairs from the cellar. I dusted off my coat and went to Weasel's desk to start my third day of being a scabber.
I don't know what will happen first: the strike will die or my soul will.
It will probably be my soul. They've already taken half of it in just the past two days.
Soul-sucking assholes.
I put the money down on Weasel's desk.
"Sleep well, Cowboy?" he asked.
Obviously not. Do you know how uncomfortable that thing is? It gets in every joint I swear.
Oscar and Morris stood to the side of me.
"Come with us, Cowboy," Oscar smirked. "After we fixed your sister yesterday, we decided that we're gonna go fix your pal, Davey too. Fix him so he can't walk."
"Shut up," I replied, stepping towards him.
"Uh-uh," Weasel spoke. I stopped and leaned on the desk looking at them as they ran away. "Lift one finger, it's right back to the Refuge."
I grabbed my papers and stormed off.
I've never felt so powerless in my life. I felt more powerful in the Refuge, a place that's made to make you feel powerless.
I walked out the gate and went to find a selling spot. At least one that wasn't inhabited by the striking newsies. Specifically the ones I was forced to betray.
I had sold a few papes. I used to find such joy hawking headlines, but now I couldn't help but feel my dinner come up my throat.
I saw Mush and Blink and made eye contact with them. Mush gave me a pleading look. Blink wrapped his arm around him and stormed off with him, giving me a glare.
I suppose I deserve that.
I decided to head a few blocks further, hoping the avoid the crowd of newsies that was surely coming.
My mind drifted back to earlier with the Delancys. What did they mean "fixed my sister"? What could they have done to her?
I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard a familiar scream.
Jaime's POV
Davey and I were walking around making sure the newsies didn't get into any trouble. As we walked we talked about the book I was reading as he read it in school. It was nice to have another person to talk to who actually knew the book. I usually had Specs and when I was younger Ace, but then Ace went to the Refuge and Specs doesn't know every book.
It was a quiet day for New York.
Almost too quiet.
Despite the usual noise of the lively city, it still felt eerily quiet.
I finally realized why when I heard Sarah screaming.
Davey and I looked at each other before running to where the sound was coming from.
We saw Morris and Oscar dragging Sarah into the alley after they had thrown Les into a pile of metal canisters (A/N: I have no clue what those are, I've rewatched this part four times. If you know please tell me 😭).
