"Sir, your takeout is ready", I glanced up from the phone and proceeded to take the parcel. I placed the takeout on the passenger seat. Since my wife was craving some sweets, she brought the doughnuts from her favourite shop.
"Yes ma'am, I saw the clips last night and did all the editing according to the requirement..."
I entered our room only to find her talking on the phone, maybe her team, whereas Sam was resting peacefully next to her on the carpet. It's almost a month since the accident and one week and a half since her plaster was removed. Since she could not go to work, she started doing work from home, whatever was in her capacity. She is almost fully recovered and will rejoin the company this coming Monday since our first international project will start on Monday.
"Yes, yes ma'am, yes I have sent the final video, you can review it and tell me if any changes are necessary."
"Ok ma'am, bye"
She ended the call and closed her eyes, resting her head back on the headboard.
"Tired?"
She nodded still closing, "And hungry", patting her stomach, and a pout forming on her perfect lips.
"Then why don't you fill it up", I replied, she immediately looked at me and a bright smile grew on her face, forwarding her hand in anticipation, to which I handed her the takeout.
Always ready for junk food.
Many things have changed between us, more comfortable with each other. Since that day, we gave a chance to our relationship, a chance of friendship.
She took out one doughnut and ate one of a hella big bite, savouring the doughnut's sweetness and sighing in satisfaction, smearing her lips with the chocolate syrup. Then another bite and another one, looking at her eating with a smile and mouth full makes me content, it might sound creepy to someone but watching her eating contently, growing healthy and happy is what makes me content too.
Her well-being and happiness are my responsibility, even if spoiling her with all the sweets and her favourites.
"Did you eat something?", she asked with all of her attention on me.
"Not in the mood"
"Eat something. It's not good to have an empty stomach. Here, have this doughnut. It's delicious."
She forwarded another doughnut from the package. I looked at one full doughnut in one hand that she had held above and a half-eaten on the other on her lap. I was standing next to her bedside and she was looking at me with those shiny eyes and a smile on her face.
Instead of taking the full doughnut, my hands made their way to the half-eaten one resting on her lap. I picked up the doughnut, feeling her gaze sharpen and questioning.
"Wh...what are you..." her voice trailed off, but I didn't pause. I took a bite from that doughnut, from the very place she had eaten before.
The taste hit me differently, sweeter, warmer like the doughnut had taken on something of her. I chewed slowly, savouring it, and then finished the rest without breaking eye contact.
She sat there, silent, her mouth slightly open, unable to finish her last sentence, caught somewhere between shock and intrigue. Her gaze never wavered, tracking every movement as if the moment were a fragile thing we might break with words.
"It's pretty good", I remarked, eating the last piece while still staring at her. The air around us seemed to slow, thickening as her eyes remained fixed on mine.
"I know," she whispered, avoiding looking into my eyes, almost to herself, her voice low and unreadable.
"But I think something was missing, it wasn't as delicious to me as you said "
She looked at me, bewildered.
