The room was empty, but her presence was still lingering.
My heart was pounding with terror. Where had she gone at this time? She must be with Mrs Singh; last I checked, she was with her only.
I rushed back to Aarya's room, where Mrs. Singh was with Aarya; she was crying, and I had an uneasy feeling throughout the whole situation.
Something feels off.
Mrs Singh came to me, "Sir, is everything alright? You seemed disturbed."
"Where is Samyuktha?"
"Must be in her room. I came back to my room due to my back pain." The startled face and the confused answer only made my stomach drop further.
"No, she is not there."
"What? Then please check the garden or somewhere, because when I saw her talking to someone from my window. Maybe she is still on the call."
A call.
Her phone is out of reach.
I checked the garden and the surrounding areas where she might be, but there was no success. The news spread quickly, and now everyone is searching for her at the resort and in the nearby areas. A waiter mentioned that she was speaking loudly to someone, but he didn't dare intervene because she appeared very angry with that person. There is a CCTV camera installed in the garden, and reviewing the footage clearly shows that she was distressed while talking to that individual. Then, suddenly, she froze after seeing something on her phone.
What was it?
The colour from her face faded as she started to hyperventilate. Her whole body was trembling; the calm composure she had always maintained was fading. I couldn't imagine what she must be feeling, being all alone. I should've never left her alone. She needed me there, and I wasn't there. The pain in my chest was rising with each second. It was one of those episodes where she suddenly took the drastic step, and that's what she did: she ran away.
In the jungle.
In the night.
Watching the footage, my anger grew as I witnessed her impulsiveness. I looked around, and the crew members and the resort members were looking worried. Why did no one notice her running away or her absence?
"All of you were right here. How come none of you noticed her absence?"
My voice rose, making some of them flinch, but right now, nothing is making sense; all I could think was that she was alone there.
My jaw was clenched so tightly that it ached; I couldn't depend on them. It's currently 1 a.m., but the night is getting darker, and so is the danger. I promised myself that I would always protect her. Why does she have to run away from me?
Why?
I immediately informed the police about the new situation, but their response left me stunned. They said it was late and the forest was dense, so they would begin the search operation in the morning. This has to be some kind of joke.
"What do you mean that I have to wait till morning?"
"It's a matter of just a few hours."
"Exactly, it's been a few hours. Every minute you wait, she gets further away."
"Sir, we have to follow the protocol."
"She is my wife, not a damn checklist." I barked at the police officer as my body heated up and trembled. Something snapped inside me.
"I will find her even if it means doing it alone"
I declared, and before the officer could react, I darted sideways, ducking under the lights and running towards the forest, completely ignoring the fact that two policemen were after me. They can't keep me away from fulfilling my duties.
So I ran with hope and determination.
"Samyukthaaa", I shouted again, but it was only swallowed by the forest silence, chest rising in short, shallow bursts. My hands were shaking as I pushed the branches aside. I've been running for a long time, but there was no sign of her.
