Suddenly the two of them heard footsteps coming up the stairs and down the hallway. Joker pushed himself off of Batman and wiped his eyes dry on his shirt.
The two of them sat back up like nothing had happened, and instead of Alfred walking into the room, and they saw the Riddler standing in the doorway.

Joker screamed.
"What are you doing here?" Batman hissed, standing up and pinning Edward to the doorframe with no hesitation.
Riddler grunted something that Joker couldn't understand due to Batman literally choking him in the throat.

Batman released his grip.
"I'm here to get Joker." He grumbled, holding onto Batman's wrist.
"You can't have him." The Bat said, dropping Edward.
The Riddler frowned. "Penguin needs you right now. He got taken to the hospital after he left yesterday."

The Joker jumped up from his beanbag.
"What?" He yelled, panic setting in. "What happened?"
"I'll have to explain on the way over, but it doesn't look good." Edward said. Joker quickly walked over to him and turned to Batman.

"I have to go." Joker told him. The Bat glared.
"How long will he be gone?" He asked Riddler.
"Depends. A day, maybe two." Riddler said. "We need to go now."
"How did you get in anyway?" Batman said casually, as though Penguin wasn't in any danger.
"Unimportant." Edward said. "I didn't use the front door."

"Come ON!" Joker panicked. How bad was it if Oswald was in the hospital? "We have to go now!"
Batman grumbled under his breath. "Fine. I'm coming."

"What?" Edward hissed. "Why would you come?"
"I am not leaving Joker with that lunatic." Batman scoffed, and Joker pushed past them both to run downstairs and out the front gates.

"Let's take the Batmobile." Batman said.
"He's afraid of you, you'll just make it worse." Joker snarled, all humor gone from his head as soon as it came down to Oswald.
"I'll stay in the back." Batman told them and the villains jumped into the Batmobile.

They drove to the hospital while Ed gave them directions.
"So what happened to him?" Joker asked Edward. Ed's face darkened and he took a breath.

"After he left Wayne Manor... he was angry over something. Something about you not taking care of yourself, or him not being able to help you get out of the Manor." Ed paused.
The Batmobile's pace increased.
"He went back to your circus tent but only got around halfway before he had a mental tantrum. He found a gun in your hoodie that at he was wearing and attempted."

Joker was horrified. No thoughts came through his brain.
The Bat was silent. The Riddler breathed again.
"I was the one that found him. Neither I, Harley, or any of the villains were able to help- the bullet was too far inside him, so I took him to the hospital in Diamond District."

"That's far!" Yelled Joker, his leg getting the bouncies.
"It was the best hospital that I could find." Riddler said.
"This is all my fault." Joker said, worrying like crazy. "If I had just stayed by him, he'd be alright now, maybe if he hadn't left the Manor.."
"You know he doesn't think when he has a tantrum. It's not your fault, J." Riddler said, putting a had on Joker's bouncing leg.

"It's because of me, Joker. I should have tried harder to keep him there." Batman said as they pulled into Diamond District.
"Oh geez, Ed, how bad was it on a scale of one to ten?" Joker gritted his teeth, his mind jumping all over the place.

"A solid eight." Riddler said. Batman parked the Batmobile and the three men took off running in to the hospital.

"Hello, how may I help- AGH!" The woman at the front desk screamed when she saw Joker, Riddler and Batman charge inside.
"Patient named Oswald Cobblepot?" Joker panicked.
"He's in Room 112, fifth floor." The woman hid behind her desk.

The Riddler thought that they should use the elevator to help Joker calm down, which Batman thought was a brilliant idea.
"No, we have to get to him. I'm taking the stairs!" Joker told them, and went up the five flights of stairs, going two at a time.

The other two looked at each other and closely followed Joker as he checked every room for Oswald.
"110... 111... 112!" Joker threw open the door to the 112th room, completely out of breath.

He saw Oswald strapped to the bed, with an IV in his chest and a heart monitor softly beeping.
"Thank goodness." Breathed Joker, nearly falling over at the sight of his friend. Oswald was unconscious, but his chest rose and fell evenly.

Edward and Batman came up behind him.
"He hasn't moved for a while, but he requested that I come get you around an hour ago." Nygma said.
"What took you so long?" Joker said, touching  Penguin's wrist to see if he could find a heartbeat.

"Bane had a blowout right outside. He was trying to break in to kill someone, but the cops came and I got stuck in here. Also, I had to walk to Wayne Manor on freaking foot, Joker. It takes a long time." Riddler said, sitting down in a chair by the end of Oswald's bed.

Joker said nothing. Batman continued to stand, and he moved to the other side of the room to stare at Penguin's condition.

"I just don't understand." Batman eventually grumbled. "Why would he try to commit over me keeping you inside of the Manor?"

"He's very sensitive, Batman." Joker said. "He's autistic, he has DMDD, he's got trauma. It was a lot for him in the moment."
The Bat said nothing again. Edward cleaned his glasses.

"I'm sorry, Joker." Ed said gently.
"Don't say that like he's gone, Ed." Joker mumbled, brushing Oswald's hand softly.

Joker knew that Nygma thought Oswald may not make it out. And if Ed Nygma thought that, then it might as well be true.

"We'll get through this together, Ozzie." Joker whispered, and bent down to put his head on Oswald's arm.
Penguin's heart monitor beeped loudly all of a sudden, and Batman and Riddler jumped in surprise.

The Joker felt a cold hand on his head, and he stood back up straight to find Penguin staring at him.
"Good, you're awake." Joker smiled.
Tears grew in Oswald's eyes.

"Did it work?" He whispered.

Joker's smile faded and he laid down on Oswald's body to give him a close hug.
"It didn't, Ozzie." He mumbled. "You're alive."
