Planes were never Hyunjin's preferred method of travel. He much preferred cars or trains. (Better yet, walking or cycling.) it couldn't be helped that he lived too far away from the only important relative of his- his mother- to simply walk. Upon moving away from his university town to get some fresh air, he also left his mother, and that he been the only restricting factor that prevented him from moving for new scenery until she sat him down with a feast and practically bullied him into looking at housing in different cities.

She really was the best mom- always knew what was good for Hyunjin and sometimes even who was good for Hyunjin. She sussed out what an asshole his ex in college had been after one simple glance.

Hyunjin had a break between commissions and gallery exhibitions, and he decided to spend those measley few days traveling to drop in for a surprise visit. He used to do it all the time in college- when he lived closer and he was scared she would be lonely. It was the first time in his adult life that he had scrounged enough money from his art to visit so leniently.

(Of course, one of his seven boyfriends definitely could have scored him first class tickets on a fancy plane- but this was something that he had to do for himself, and they all knew that, so they never threw their money at him unless he directly asked for it.)

And speaking of boyfriends- he had yet to tell his mom about them. It's what he had planned to do on this visit because they were as serious as they could get considering they had known each other for quite a while now. It was part of why he anxiously wrung his fingers together when the plane landed. He hated planes- but he hated anticipation even more.

Once the plane landed, Hyunjin made a point to block the aisle so that the pregnant woman and her child could get out of the seats without being rushed (because the little girl really wanted the window seat- and who was Hyunjin to say no to puppy eyes? He wasn't a monster) and then help the woman with her luggage when it was too high. Hyunjin was thankful he was a male- being pregnant looked like it sucked.

The air in the town he grew up in was crisp and a lot more earthy. The small farmers town was a thirty minute commute by bus to the university he went to, and sometimes Hyunjin did enjoy escaping the bustle of the city to return to the cabin he grew up in. It was nestled between the thick hills with a garden containing greens for food, a well, and anything that the land could offer to live off of. Sometimes, Hyunjin worried about his mom living all by herself, but the neighbors were close enough in case anything were to happen.

Hyunjin inhaled the familiar scent, a small smile curling his lips upwards as his sneakers crunched over the gravel driveway and then up the wooden steps of the quaint house. And maybe if Hyunjin were paying enough attention to anything other than the familiar scene enveloping him, he would have recognized the tire tracks marrying the gravel and the smell of exhaust from corroded tailpipes.

Slinging his backpack over his shoulder, Hyunjin knocked politely on the door. Once, twice, three times. The little wreath he made for her to put on the door when he was little bounced with each reverberation. He would need to make her a new one- a more professional one than the one he made as a kid in arts and craft class.

There was shuffling from the other side accompanied by a small 'Just a moment!' And Hyunjin shuffled from foot to foot, the cool mountain breeze blowing past his hair until the footsteps on the other side approached. The door opened. "Hello?-"
