15. Family Time.
Siya sat across from her patient, Jisha Patel, who was visibly distressed. The room was quiet, save for the soft hum of the air conditioner, and Siya could feel the weight of Jisha’s emotions.
"Jisha, can you tell me more about what's been troubling you?" Siya asked gently, leaning forward to show her support.
Jisha sighed deeply, her eyes reflecting her inner turmoil. "It’s just... I’m so confused about my feelings, Dr. Kapoor. I have a good friend who’s always been there for me. He’s supportive, smart, and really cares about me." Siya nodded, encouraging her to continue. "And the other person?"
Jisha’s expression darkened slightly. "The other one... he’s someone I thought I liked. But he’s self-centered and self-obsessed. He rarely thinks about anyone but himself, and it's making me question my feelings even more."
Siya could see the conflict in Jisha’s eyes. "It sounds like you’re feeling torn between these two people. One who offers genuine support and care, and another who might not be as considerate."
Jisha nodded, tears welling up. "Exactly. And it’s making me more depressed. I don’t know why I even like someone who treats me this way. I feel guilty because my good friend deserves better, but I can't seem to shake these confusing feelings."
Siya reached out, placing a reassuring hand on Jisha’s. "It’s important to acknowledge your feelings, Jisha, no matter how confusing they might be. Feelings aren’t always logical, and it’s okay to feel conflicted."
"But what do I do, Dr. Kapoor?" Jisha asked, her voice trembling. "I don’t want to lose my friend, but I also don’t want to be stuck with these feelings for someone who isn’t good for me."
"First, you need to give yourself permission to feel what you’re feeling without judgment," Siya advised. "It’s okay to feel attracted to someone even if they’re not perfect. But it’s also important to consider what you truly want in a relationship. Do you want someone who’s supportive and cares about you, or someone who’s more focused on themselves?"
Jisha wiped her tears, nodding slowly. "I know I deserve someone who values me and my feelings. But letting go of this crush is hard."
"It will take time, Jisha. But focusing on what you need and deserve in a relationship is a good start," Siya said softly. "And remember, it’s okay to seek support from your good friend. Let him know what you’re going through. True friends will understand and stand by you."
Jisha took a deep breath, a small sense of relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dr. Kapoor. Talking about this helps. I think I just needed to hear that it’s okay to be confused."
Siya smiled warmly. "You’re not alone, Jisha. We all go through confusing emotions at times. What matters is how we navigate through them and make choices that are best for our well-being."
