Kayla sat in the back seat of the van staring out the window, watching the snowy landscape pass by. It'd been a few months since she and Nick were officially fostered by Kanan and Hera. Now everyone was going to a holiday light event. Nick was talking with Ezra, Sabine and Zeb were talking about Star Wars, the bad batch. Hera was driving Kanan was sitting in the passenger seat. He glanced in the rear view mirror, seeing Kayla staring out the window. She looked up at him, to which he responded with a warm smile. At the event, the crew piled out, everyone was wearing winter gear. They started walking. "So what is this going to be?" Nick spoke up, he'd been hanging out with Ezra a lot more recently and it made Kayla feel better to know that Nick had a friend that wasn't just her. "It's a holiday light event, we show our tickets, and we walk around." Hera explained. Kayla shifted, looking around at the people, subconsciously drifting closer to Kanan. He put a hand on her shoulder and the girl relaxed. After a while they came across a light canopy. Kayla ran ahead with Nick and Ezra, but while the boys kept going she stopped and turned around in place. The golden yellow lights created spot on her green eyes, their spark of wonder returning. She felt a hand on her shoulder, turning to face Kanan who had a grin on his face, and this time she gave one back. It warmed him to see the tired girl let loose.
Back home
Kayla sat in the window seat again staring out into space once again, everyone else was in the living room playing some kind of game, well almost everyone. "Kayla?" Kanan asked. Kayla's eyes shifted to his reflection in the glass. "Hey Kanan." She said without turning around. "I'm okay I'm just lost in the past I guess." He understood "I've always felt like you had something to say, and I'm ready to hear it whenever you're ready to talk." He said standing up to walk away. "Nick and I weren't always street kids, we once had a family. But it changed when the empire attacked, I watched them kill my parents and they eventually got to Cam. Nick and I are the only ones left of our family. I don't know what to do about it. Nick and I are just trying to figure out what comes next. We are used to only having one another. Nick was more open than I was and I'm still trying to adjust. It's just a little hard." Kayla explained. Kanan listened attentively, and at the end of her little rant he pulled her close, holding her to his chest. "Kayla, You are so brave and capable, you are strong enough to get through this. We are here for you, don't be afraid to talk to me or Hera or anyone. You are strong and you are loved. I can see that in Nick. I love that you are trying, and I hope you can keep being strong." He looked down to find the girl on his chest sound asleep. He remembered what Nick had said. "She is scared to be around someone new, slow to warm up to them, but with a little time she'll show that sweet girl that I know and love." He looked at her, shifted to get more comfortable, pulling her closer and eventually falling asleep himself. Hera found this little sence, snapping a photo she covered them with a blanket. Kanan stirred awake. "Hey love." Hera greeted. He smiled back. "Looks like someone is letting their gourd down." Hera acknowledged looking at the raven haired girl snuggled close to him. "Yeah we were talking and she fell asleep." He understood why she was so shut up. "Want me to move her?" Hera asked. He looked back at Kayla with a warm smile. "Nah I'm okay." He said. Hera nodded, leaving Kanan with his foster daughter. He fell back asleep still holding his arm around the girl in a protective embrace.
