If Mark wasn't in good condition, his head would've started hurting from how much he thought about his and Donghyuck's situation.

You see, although vampires were often portrayed as having relations to love and lust, in reality, love was awkward for Mark and any other vampire. They were all aromantics and pretty much asexuals as the only way they usually got pleasure, became euphoric, and, well, momentarily aroused, was when they drank blood. The only relationships they cherished were narrow circles of family members and befriended humans, which was like taking care of a pet, coming to see them, buying them snacks, and keeping them alive.

One thing about vampires was that they reproduced like crazy, but just because of necessity, and quite rarely out of love. Mark's parents lived different lives as soon as Taeyong was old enough to take care of his younger brothers. They disappeared. As Taeyong said, "We might see them in a couple of hundred years."

Although Taeyong was the only one of the Lees who was at least a tiny bit on the romantic side, Mark didn't learn anything from him. He used to watch how Taeyong and Doyoung behaved to each other, but couldn't comprehend how one felt that—what about another person made the other fall in love? What was the meaning of that and why did that need to happen? If it was essential,  why did that happen to humans while vampires were deprived of it? He once asked Doyoung what love is since the latter used to be human. "Love is the best thing in the world," Doyoung replied with a smile. He then shared his experience with love but it only made Mark awkward.

He avoided asking about that again and never tried to find out what it meant to love someone romantically. Maybe he knew it was barely possible for him to find the answer. Or maybe he just didn't care anymore. Love was meant for humans. To vampires—it was resistance and strength. And empathy.

Love stuff wasn't for him, he thought, which was why he felt anxious and lost when Donghyuck asked him out back in the hospital. He forgot about this, which was the best thing that could happen. But thanks to Taeyong, he found out that Donghyuck still liked him.

Can you believe it? That human didn't care that the guy he was interested in turned out to be a vampire and continued developing his feelings! Mark was freaking out. It shouldn't be like this. Not only was it awkward, but it was also impossible. A human falling in love with a vampire? What was this, a romance novel? If this had landed in Mark's hands, he would've thrown it out his window.

He spent a lot of time thinking about what he should do about the human. He planned to confront Donghyuck and tell him to stop since such a thing was bad for their deal. The human's blood was more delicious, Mark couldn't lie, but if feelings were involved in this, the vampire would feel awkward even being around Donghyuck. Maybe Mark stopped raising questions about love, but he had seen it thousands of times and knew what humans do when they think they have a chance. They become clingy and try flirting, right?

But wasn't confronting itself uncomfortable? Mark hated the subject of love. He hated to think and talk about it. And talking about it to a human? Holy bat! That was the worst! A human was someone who would never understand a vampire and the other way around. They were like water and fire.

"Fuck," Mark ran a hand through his hair. "Why did it have to be me?"

He thought about it again and concluded. He won't say anything to Donghyuck. He will pretend that he has no idea and avoid anything related to romance. For that to work better, he planned to see Donghyuck less, expecting to lower the human's interest in him. After all, there were many humans out there for Donghyuck to choose from, so why would he hold onto a vampire?

Mark didn't visit Donghyuck for almost a week and he gave no warning. He got one text from the boy as it must've appeared unusual for Mark not to show up. Then a second came. The vampire read and replied to neither of those. He ignored Donghyuck for a while, hoping that such a thing would ruin whatever the human thought about him.
