Mark was so angry at Donghyuck that he didn't come to see the human for three days. He had a few thoughts about checking on him, but he brushed them all off and concentrated on his work. So what if he went to drink again? Maybe it was his fate.
After those three days, Mark realized how wrong he was thinking about Donghyuck. He was ashamed and felt bad for wishing him more trouble when he was already a human, born to suffer. The vampire started blaming himself as he recalled their last conversation. Mark accused Donghyuck of acting childishly, but he too acted not like a grown-up. Instead of listening to what was bothering the human, which was already obvious, he blamed and called him stupid.
He started creating a little plan to apologize to Donghyuck. Mark thought about bringing something delicious but chose to come empty-handed instead. Giving food might be a bad approach. It was like he tried to bribe Donghyuck into thinking that everything was fine, and they were good again.
As the clock struck ten in the evening, Mark left his house and headed toward Doghyuck's. Noticing the lights through the window and the figure of the human, Mark's mood improved, and he felt that talking to the human wouldn't be that hard.
Approaching the window that was tilted open, Mark knocked on the window to get the human's attention. The latter wore headphones but heard the knock right away. Narrowing his eyes, he looked at Mark. Or maybe he didn't see him as the next second, Donghyuck darted his eyes to his notebook and continued studying.
From Donghyuck's body language, it was easy to tell that he was ignoring Mark. However, the vampire just couldn't bear this thought and chose to believe that Donghyuck couldn't see him from a fully lighted room. He knocked a few more times, but Donghyuck no longer looked at him. Then, Mark glanced at the small gap and took a deep breath. It seemed like it was time for the humiliating plan again.
It took him time to finally get inside as his bat belly had gotten bigger, and as he did, he noticed Donghyuck glancing out of the window as if checking if the bat had already disappeared.
"Are you avoiding me?" Mark asked, dropping upside down while his little feet held on the table lamp.
Donghyuck hung his head low and glued his eyes to his notebook.
"If you are, that's fine. I was really rude to you."
The boy reached for his phone, pressing the button to turn the music up. And he did it overboard. Mark could hear it even when he kept his distance. Donghyuck would rather deafen himself than listen to what the vampire had to say.
"Donghyuck," he sighed.
Flying to the human's head, Mark pushed his foot under the headband and after a few seconds, pulled it down. Donghyuck panicked and wanted to wear the headphones again, but Mark landed on his hand to prevent it.
"Listen to me."
"Leave me alone!" Donghyuck screamed, slapping Mark hard enough for the vampire to fall to the floor.
Mark wasn't mad. It didn't hurt.
"We really need to talk things out!"
Donghyuck was about to put on the headphones to dissociate himself from this room when suddenly Mark turned into his usual form and took them away.
"We're in a very weird situation. Let's just talk and try to be what we were again. So, please, listen to me."
"I don't want to listen to anything you'd say!" Donghyuck shook his head. "You only humiliate me and lower my self-esteem! Whatever we had was very toxic."
"I said all of those things without even thinking properly. I was just worried about you."
"You're not worried about me!" Donghyuck snapped, suddenly looking up to glare at the vampire. "You only care about my blood! You want less trouble for yourself, therefore you stick to me and try to make me healthier so I won't die! It's all about damn blood!"
"That's not true," Mark said, but his words lacked confidence.
Maybe because there was half of the truth in Donghyuck's statement. Mark cared about the human because of his blood condition, but he also cared about the Donghyuck's every other condition. Healthy blood meant a healthy body and mind.
"That's true! You always run away after you feed on me. It's 'cause you no longer need me and don't even want to see me! You lose interest in me as soon as you're full," Donghyuck went on. "Whenever I tried to hold you up, it was visible on your face that you tried to endure me."
"It's... It's because of your feelings," Mark couldn't hold it anymore. "You're too open and it makes me uncomfortable sometimes."
Donghyuck chuckled in disbelief, then grew mad again.
"You should've told me this sooner, not when I had already let you inside my heart. You should've told me that you have a girlfriend and are homophobic."
"Don't make assumptions by yourself. I don't have a girlfriend and I have nothing against your sexuality, I just..."
"You what?"
"Vampires are... aromantics and asexual. You know what that means, right? I feel no romantic feelings nor sexual attraction to either humans or vampires. The only thing that makes me feel similar is human blood."
"That's... That's just bullshit," Donghyuck facepalmed.
"That's true. Why do you think the asexual rate grew bigger in the past few years? Vampires started coming out."
Donghyuck kept his face covered for a while. Mark could feel that he was ashamed but avoided pointing that out.
"That's why I want us to be friends instead. We can be friends, right?"
"Hyung..." Donghyuck said wearily. "Friends know things about each other. And we don't."
He finally separated his hands from his face but then flinched. Mark smelled blood before he could see it. Only a few seconds later did he see blood coming out of the human's nose. He approached Donghyuck before the latter could run off to the bathroom and, taking him by the chin, gazed at the blood with growing attraction.
Mark saw Donghyuck's lips moving as the blood boy tried to say something, but he couldn't stop himself any longer and leaned in. He licked the blood from Donghyuck's lips, accidentally touching them together and kissing the human. Not even noticing it, Mark went on, traveling up to Donghyuck's nose and taking the tip into his mouth. He heard how the boy's heart started pounding and the next second he was pushed away.
Donghyuck stormed to the bathroom where he must've taken toilet paper and plugged it into his nose. Coming out, the human kept his distance as he said the following part, "This is the last time you've tasted my blood."
Confused, Mark furrowed his eyebrows, "What?"
"I-I can't do this anymore... If I don't have a chance to be with you, there's no point in us seeing each other. Both of us need to benefit from this and I don't..."
"W-what about money? I'm paying you."
"Fuck money, your existence blocks my happiness!" Donghyuck said, tearing up. "There might have been so many opportunities for me to meet other men, but you keep messing things up. I can't move on as I keep getting attracted to everyone who looks like you."
"Donghyuck..."
"No," the boy stepped back into the bathroom. Reaching for the doorknob, he continued, "Please, go. If you leave, then one day I'll let go of you too. I'll open my heart for a human, not a vampire..."
Mark headed toward the door, but the human had already locked himself in.
"Donghyuck," he said, pressing his head to the door. "Are you sure about this?"
"I'm more than sure, hyung. I need to put an end to this," the latter replied in a sad voice. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone about you."
Realizing that there was nothing else he could do, Mark gave in. Although he was weirded out by the feeling he thought of as defeat, he respected Donghyuck's decision.
"Right... Take care."
"I'll stop drinking..."
"I believe you."
The conversation cut off and Mark couldn't feel more distressed about losing the human. He tried to escape the confusing feeling by opening the window and flying into the deepest night. But it didn't disappear. It followed him for days, then grew into weeks.
