Donghyuck came out of the building with a bright aura around him. He greeted Mark, smiling widely.
"Where will you take me?" he asked excitedly.
Mark thought about addressing what he saw yesterday but shut his mouth and dropped the idea. It wasn't his business. Donghyuck seemed quite fine, almost like himself if not for that damn hangover. Because Mark could see a little discomfort the human dealt with.
"Do you like fast food?"
"Even though I work as a pizza delivery guy, I hate pizzas. But I can eat hamburgers."
Mark took Donghyuck to a burger place. He felt like the scene he saw yesterday was nothing as Donghyuck ate so well. He also talked a lot and seemed positive. The vampire thought that everything was back to normal.
But that wasn't even near that. Donghyuck was all bright and smiley when he met with Mark, but it was way different as soon as the human closed his apartment door. Once he thought he was out of Mark's sight, he turned moody and depressed. The vampire kept observing Donghyuck from afar, flying to a tree or watching him through his car window. He witnessed enough to conclude.
Donghyuck turned sad and did nothing but lie in his bed and drink. Finishing one drink, he tossed it away and reached for another one—he had a whole line of bottles beside his bed. He drank and drank, then stared at the ceiling, and finally fell asleep.
Such things, his drinking habits, could be felt in his blood. The night Mark came to Donghyuck, he had no thoughts of what the human's blood could taste. But as he got the drop into his mouth—he could feel the alcohol. Mark really wanted to address this and was about to do it just as he drew back, but Donghyuck rose and walked to the desk, mumbling something about exams. Mark didn't want to bother him as he sat there and started reading something, so he left.
But his departure was fake. He landed on his favorite tree branch and observed Donghyuck. At first, the boy looked like he was really studying but after a few minutes, his body started twitching and he burst into tears. He didn't wipe anything or try to cover his face. Indeed, he seemed to be used to those uncontrollable tears. Mark knew it wasn't the first time he cried, although it was the first time he had witnessed it.
He cried for a while. He tried to stop by reading a book, but it didn't work. Donghyuck kept getting distracted which made him shed more tears. He whimpered as if he was in great pain. And maybe it was painful. He was hurt somewhere, maybe not physically, but sure emotionally.
Mark had to leave as it was too much for him to comprehend in such a short time. Even though he knew it was partly his fault, Donghyuck was like this because he still felt something for him. Mark was one hundred percent sure as he heard the pounding heart of the human just as he leaned closer. In normal circumstances, a human's heart never beats that fast, Mark knew. It only happened when a human was scared, but since it wasn't Donghyuck's case, the only explanation would be that his heart beat like that because of his romantic feelings.
Mark learned that romantic feelings were a burden. The human was suffering. Love was painful. It seemed like it because why else would Donghyuck cry? He was upset, hurt, disappointed... But wasn't it a normal process humans went through? They all had suffered because of love in the past and even now and if that was the issue, Donghyuck just had to overcome this obstacle and get better.
He can do it.
As much as Mark could see, Donghyuck was a strong-willed human. He'll move on. All Mark had to do was let the human do it by himself. First, Donghyuck knew what was going on way better than Mark. It was in his nature to fall in love. Second, the vampire would've found it awkward if he tried to help.
