Eleven
Matt 🗡️
It was a little annoying how we, two of the strongest victors, were standing behind a sixteen-year-old girl silently making faces at each other about who would approach us first. A voice finally interrupted our little slapping match. "Can I help you both?" She said, abandoning petting the horse. "Uh, yes. Matt would love to have a conversation with you." Kamari said as I shot her a glare. "You must be Katniss." I manage to voice out as I can see Kami giving me a disappointed look from the corner of my eye. "You approached me. So, you must know who I am." She commented as Kami hid her face by pretending to brush something off her dress, but I knew she was trying to hold in her laughter.
"Charming as ever my dear." Another voice joined our conversation and suddenly a red blur jumped from around me at the drunkard as she let out an excited sigh of, "Haymitch!" "Good to see you kid." Haymitch said as he rubbed Kami's back only to receive a high-pitched squeal from Pixie from the other end of the room. "I'm sorry. What is happening?" The girl in black questioned as Kamari pulled away from Haymitch.
"Katniss. These are Kamari Grey and Mathew Harmon. Victors from district 10. Fun fact, they have the biggest pool of victors aside from the careers." Haymitch said as I held my hand out to Katniss. She gave me a look before silently rejecting my hand shake, which honestly hurt but I tried not to show but the way Kamari laughed, I'm pretty sure I looked like a 'kicked puppy'. (her words, not mine)
"I knew that." She sassed as Haymitch gave her look making the teenager roll her eyes at him. "They are both long-time friends. And after a long discussion with Matt, he has agreed for the two of you to be allies." Haymitch said motioning between the two-girl making both them look at their mentors. Kamari's gaze screamed 'what the hell' at me but I silently chose to ignore it knowing that I would be getting it later.
Thankfully, her rant was ended before it started as they announced for the tributes to get in line. Kamari gave me one last angry look before storming off to her chariot. She really did look like a queen. With the golden wrapping around her head and the flowing red and golden details. The material flowed behind her as she walked further away. "I know, you're worried about her." Haymitch sounded from behind, a lot more sober than I'm used to. Taking responsibility of Katniss and Peeta really has changed him.
Being someone's father figure has that effect. Haymitch had told me of all the nightmares he had heard her waking up from and how horribly helpless he felt that he couldn't help her. I had experienced the same thing with Kamari and for a while it had gotten worse once Fallon died. It had killed me knowing that I couldn't save Fallon and when I saw the rabbit hole Kamari was headed down, I couldn't help it.
From showing up at her house at the crack ass of dawn to drag her for a run to making dinner and eating with her, Leena and Meera every night. One night everything happened at once. She told me how a boy had asked her out and since then the 4 of us had been a family. Well, after she cried in my arms until 4 in the morning.
I never understood Fallon or even Keith for that matter until watching her weep and knowing that there was nothing I could do. I had this sudden urge to hurt whatever had made her cry but I couldn't. and I remember her cries like they are imprinted on the inside of my ear and every time the wind howls in my ear, her cries are the only thing I hear.
I remember being torn from the inside at the sight of her. It killed me that I couldn't take her pain away and that day I vowed that I would never let anything hurt her but right now...
I can feel myself failing.
I know I'm failing.
