Twenty-four
Kamari
"We should head back to the beach. Try to get to the cornucopia." I said, as I wrapped my hand in the moss to cover scratches from the blades. "Why would we go back?" I muttered about how dense he was, but as I opened my mouth to say something, I heard a blood-curdling scream. And I would have run in the other direction if it wasn't for what followed. "MAGS!"
And the heart took over.
I ran towards finnick's voice. I could barely register Peeta behind me. He kept asking what was wrong. I didn't respond until I slammed into a wall. An invisible one. I got up from where I had fallen on my ass and ran my fingers along the material. It was the shielding technology Beete had developed.
"Can you please answer me?" Peeta's voice snapped me out of the trance Finnick's voice had sent me in. "Finnick, Katniss and Mags," My voice broke a little and I swallowed. "They're on the other side. I hit the wall with my moss wrapped fist one more time as the wall fell in, Peeta followed but just as he did, the wall reformed. But something told me, it wasn't an accident. That was when I felt the hair on the back of my neck burn.
I looked back and saw the tendrils of fog stretched out towards me. Reaching for me like a hand. But something was very wrong. From Finnick's scream to the burning on my neck. "Peeta, run." Was all I said, before the fog shot out towards me. I slashed down with my sword but My hand burned as I let out a scream. I ran after Peeta.
But the fog seemed to know that I wasn't there anymore. The entire cloud seemed to shift its attention to me. It hollow grey eyes seemed to follow. And all I could do was run. The fog was chasing us. It was a monster created by the man who vowed to protect us. And we were its prey.
Peeta
All I could do was run infront of her. She was not running at her full speed. I had seen Kamari run before. In her games, briefly at the training centre, the one day she had shown up. I knew I was going slower than needed because I could see the wisps of fog starts to curl around me. So, either the monster was sparing her or she was running in the thick of it to protect me. But why?
I ran back, as my whole body burned but I bared it long enough to grab her and pull her along. And we ran. I could see her tripping over branches, as her body refused to cooperate. But I kept running until the soil under started to become dry. Until it was sand.
We broke out through the clearing and Kamari collapsed on the sand. The fog seemed to touch a border as it turned back around. And when I stopped to breathe I realized the pain my body was in. The big boils that covered both our skin and the pain that seared through them. And I could only grip the handle of my sword before everything went black.
