Seventeen

Joey♟️

She walked out right behind and Keith and my breath was taken away. For the first time, I realized that the scared little girl who used to wake up screaming in the middle of the night. The same little girl who would not talk to anyone. The same little girl who used to hold onto my sleeve whenever she was dragged into a reaping. She wasn't so little anymore.

Her dress fell to the floor behind her. Everyone was soon enamoured by the district 12 girl but I know all of us, the people who had seen Kami as a little girl could not see anyone else. Even though she was the 20th person to interview, the crowd went wild when she stepped up to the platform with unfaltering grace.

"Kamari, Kamari, Kamari." Flickerman said, helping her onto the platform. "The last you were here. You were 12." He said, wiping his coloured face as she smiled. "Well, time flew. Cause it feels like only yesterday." She said into the mic he was offering. "Well, it indeed does. Cause I think many people here are getting quite emotional. Including me." Ceaser said his voice crack towards the end as Kamari, ever the player, pulled him in for hug. The camera panned to show many of the audience wiping their eyes with cloths expensive than our entire houses.

"I'm so sorry, love. This is supposed to be about you." Ceaser said, wiping away his tears and Kamari patted his shoulder. "So tell me." The interviewer started, regaining his composure.

Kamari

"So, tell me." The man in front of me said as I looked at him with a slight smile. "What are your plans for these games?" He asked and I pretended to contemplate for a bit. "Well, Ceaser. As you'll see tomorrow. My strategy is a lot different. I can't play the innocent helpless girl this time because I think everyone knows I'm anything but." I said, channelling confidence in every word. A satisfaction spread through me as I heard a chorus of chuckles, including 1 from Ceaser. "Well, I'm here to fight and I'm walking out of that arena alive. Ain't no other way." I said, making sure go make myself look confident.

"And one last question," Ceaser started and I had a feeling I knew what was coming. "Is there any special one back home you'd like to give a message to?" the Interviewer asked and I could almost hear every one suck in a sharp breath. "It's fine if there isn't." Ceaser jokingly added as I made sure to laugh before I started my answer.

My eyes, even from this distance, found Finnick's as he looked pained. For a second, I looked away, trying not to feel the goosebumps travelling up my arms as I remembered the speech he gave, his eyes not leaving mine once.

"Actually, Ceaser. There is." I took a breath, my eyes finding Finnick again as I looked at him through the corner of my eyes. "I know you're watching this. And I wish I was there with you. I am going to miss you dearly, cause every time my heart beats, just know it beats for you. I have waited long enough that not even death is gonna do us part. I will love you until my last breath and I will love none but you." I poured my heart out, looking at the camera as I imagined saying it to his face. I heard a sniffle as Ceaser voice bought me back to reality. "Well, that was beautiful, love. I think there is only time left for a twirl." He said motioning me to twirl and I did. The stones reflected rivers of blood running over me.

WhenI finally made my way up the stairs. I looked at Finnick once, only allowingmyself that one moment. I looked to the other end on the upper level only tofind him already looking at me. I held in my emotions as I saw the tears in hiseyes. I looked away, smiling at Brutus as he passed me, grazing my arm slightlyin comfort.
