Thirty
Kamari
We were now around the tree and my heart was beating in my ears. This was it. This was the end and I couldn't help the knot that was growing tighter in my stomach every few minutes. I had already thrown up once but the uneasiness didn't go away. I grabbed the hilt of my sword tightly as the edge dug into my skin. I felt the pain drown out the panic. I tried to pay attention to what Beetee was saying, it might be important. But deep down my brain was going over my personal plan. Going over what I needed to do? But deep down I feared that the other back home and, in the capitol, would not get out in time. But right now, I had to focus on everything that was happening.
I felt bile rise up my throat again as I only got far enough to throw up in a tree. "I think it's time you guys leave, if you are going to get to the beach by midnight." Beetee said handing the coil to Katniss while also keeping an eye on me. "Two O' clock sector." Beetee said, looking dead into my eyes and a chill passed over me. As we stood in silence for a second. All of us considering the same thing.
What if we fail?
No. I couldn't think that way. Failure was not an option. There was too much at risk. To many people involved this time. My hand unconsciously reached to the scar on my side, where had Snow had cut me open the last my tributes had tried something. Trust me when I say, there is reason the 69th hunger games aren't televised. There is a reason that the victor accidently died before the victor tour.
I handed the coil to Johanna as the three if us took a final inventory of everything we carried. Weapons. Water. Coil. There wasn't much else. That was until Finnick raced towards me and one fell swoop, his lips were on mine. His lips moulded against mine just like they had all those times before. In that silent moment, so close to our victory, I allowed myself to imagine a future with him. "Come back to me." He said, his lips grazing my own with each movement.
"I will." The unsaid words hung in the static air between us and I wanted to kiss him again. To tell him that I loved him. That I had since I understood what love was. That I imagined a future with him. But I just slipped Matt's ring off and slipped on Finnick's ring finger. "Give to me when I get back." I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
It wasn't just a souvenir to hold onto. It was a promise. That she would see him again. But it was so much more than that. It was a promise of safety. A promise of a future together.
Without another word I ran off after Johanna and Katniss. I wasn't sure I could have even said anything else. By the time I caught up with the two. The tears had dried and my smirk must have been back because Johanna rolled her eyes after seeing me. "Focus lover girl. We've got a job." Johanna mocked me and I drew my sword. "Well, Ms. Mason. Kamari Afghan reporting for duty." I joked brandishing my sword.
---
Sadly, we did not make it far before the wire snapped. Johanna stared at the end. "It looks cut off. Someone's coming." I said, looking at the clean cut of the wire without any damage on the ends. My eyes met Johanna's and without further we jumped into action. Johanna tossed me her axe. She expertly caught my knife before tackling Katniss. Enobaria and Brutus made around the corner as I heard Katniss screamed at my knife cutting through her skin.
"You little bitch." Enobaria said as she charged. An Axe was not my weapon of choice but I got why Johanna liked them so much. It was well balanced and sharp and the other edge had a nail looking hooked end to it.
I swung it, fighting off the two until I heard Johanna scream 'done' as the axe found home in Brutus' chest.
As I ran, I wished I felt guilt or fear, but all I felt was exhilaration. I could hear Enobaria chasing me in the distance. Hopefully Katniss would follow through the plan. I knew where I was going. I knew this arena like the back of my hand. I had preparing for this moment for this moment for the past 2 years. I had spent nights studying this arena.
Though I had no idea where Johanna was. I saw the lightening tree as I jumped over a rock. A dagger flew past my head. I can't really explain what happened next but Enobaria wasn't after me anymore. "Remember who the real enemy is." Finnick said to Katniss as I mirrored is stance, still trying to piece everything together.
"Katniss get away." I rushed forward but was pulled back by Finnick as I saw Katniss aim her bow at the sky just as lightening struck the tree. We were all thrown back. My body couldn't seem to stop tumbling down. But once it did. It took me a while before I could find my way up. I saw the hovercraft waiting. As I raced to it.
I climbed onto the claw holding a passed-out Johanna and relief ran through me as I realized that we were finally safe. I looked down at Johanna's peaceful face and allowed myself to slump against the metal claw.
Now they could finally be safe and once Snow was dead. They would never have to live in fear again.
It was all over.
They made it.
