I closed my eyes and hoped that it was just a student, but let’s face it. A student wouldn’t bang hard on the bathroom door.

“SkyBird let’s face it,” I said as I gulped. SkyBird slowly nodded but looked scared. I tried to smile at her but I found that I couldn’t. How could anyone smile while there’s evil men trying to kill them? I slowly opened the door and got a face full of fist. I fell backwards, and landed on my back. A man grabbed SkyBird up by her shirt. I jumped to my feet and tried to fight back but was punched in the stomach and pinned down to the ground before I could even swing.

“Let us go!” SkyBird yelped as she tried to get out of her captor’s grip, but he had her in a tight grip.

“Why are you here? What do you want? Who are you? And why us?” I managed to ask before the two men who had me pinned down could stop me.

“We’re here to...help you. Who we are isn’t important,” one of the men answered. Yeah, sure. They were gonna help us by kidnapping us. Like that was gonna make things better for us. I was gonna try to break free, but suddenly the men let SkyBird and I go. I jumped back to my feet and swung at one of the men. Lucky for him he ducked just in time.

“Next time I’ll knock the living soul out of you!” I threatened while jumping in front of SkyBird to protect her.

“Don’t be so smug and confident. This was just a test,” Mr. Peterson replied as they walked away. SkyBird and I rushed out of the bathroom and saw them walk out of the school like nothing had ever happened! I looked from side to side and saw students were stunned. At least SkyBird and I weren’t the only ones who were surprised. SkyBird and I slowly walked back to the library. The right side of my head was throbbing and my stomach was doing back flips.

“You okay Hero? You have a bruise on the right side of your face!” Meghan said with sympathy. I nodded and sat down. SkyBird sat down with me.

The police were called to come in and investigate. Mr. Herrington, the principal told them everything that happened.

“Hero Winged and SkyBird Winged to the office,” the intercom said. SkyBird and I just got to our second period class, world cultures. We looked at each other then walked off to the office. I hoped  the police wouldn’t ask us much questions.

“Many teachers and students say that these men were after you two. Do you know who these people were?” a policeman asked while holding a notepad and pencil in his hands.

“We’re just as puzzled everyone else,” I replied hoping they wouldn’t see through my lie.

“Okay do you think you know why they were after you both?” the policeman asked.

“I can’t think of any reason they would come after us,” SkyBird spoke up. I was so glad that SkyBird didn’t say anything that sounded suspicious. SkyBird and I actually swore on the first day we realized that these men were watching us to never tell a soul why. We knew why they were after us, and we knew things about these people that no one else knew. But these secrets were to be kept secret. That’s why they’re called secrets.

“Do you mind if we bring these two to the police station for protection in case these people come back?” the policeman asked Mr. Herrington.

Mr. Herrington nodded, “Anything to protect them from these people.”

“Can we grab our bags?” I asked as I felt the bruise on my head. It was a nasty bruise that showed evidence of the small battle I had between those men.

“Of course,” the policeman replied with a smile. SkyBird and I quickly rose from our seats and made our way out of the office.

“I don’t know why but I have a bad feeling about this,” I said to SkyBird once we were out of hearing distance.

“Yeah I do too,” SkyBird replied with a nod as we walked back into our classroom to grab our things. We then walked to our lockers and grabbed our bags, then started back towards the office. SkyBird was about to open the door when she and I both heard Mr. Herrington and the policeman talking. Thank the Lord for our stealthiness!

“Looks like they bought it,” the policeman said with a laugh.

“They’re good students and always trust us,” Mr. Herrington replied. I peaked and saw the policeman wasn’t a policeman after all. It was one of those men! Mr. Herrington was with them all along!

“We need to get out of here now!” I whispered to SkyBird, realizing time was ticking.

“Let’s make a run for it!” SkyBird whispered back, pointing to the front door. I shook my head. I knew that they would both notice us if we went through the front door.

“We can’t use the front doors. They’ll notice us easily. Let’s us the doors on the high school side. Then we’ll use the path in the woods that leads to IGA to escape,” I explained as we both slowly snuck away from the door to the office.

Once we made it to the high school side we ran for the doors and ran towards the path. It was our only escape route left. We needed to leave this town. The men wanted us and they weren’t going to give up until they had us. Well fine. If it’s a war they want, then it’s a war they’ll get!
