We landed in the woods only a few miles from our town. Guilford. We all hid our wings so no one would get any bright ideas. “I have an idea on how we can tell the town without having to go face to face with anyone,” I said as we stealthily stayed out of sight from citizens.
“What is it?” SkyBird and Connor asked in unison.
“You know that spotlight thing the town has on the tallest building in Guilford? Well let’s use it to show a message,” I replied with confidence.
“But nobody will be able to see it during day,” Connor said.
“Yeah and how many people are actually gonna see it?” SkyBird added.
“Easy. We do it during night, and let’s go to the Bangor Daily Newspaper and put in an announcement in the newspaper. We’ll do it tomorrow night,” I planned. SkyBird and Connor both shrugged and nodded in agreement.
My newspaper add was very mysterious and interesting. It said: “A cryptic message will be shown tomorrow night in the nighttime sky. If you would like to know what the message is go to Guilford, Maine, then to the bridge in town. The message will be able to be seen around midnight. Be prepared for what you will read.”
We slept in the trees that night and were anxious for the next night. Connor was able to sneak us all hotdogs for breakfast. I was stealthy enough to grab two gallons of milk, which we all drank within five minutes. “Should we pay a visit to some old friends?” I asked SkyBird and Connor. I was thinking of Hannah, Christal, and Meghan. Even though Christal and Meghan could be a bit, well mean I still wanted to see them. Hannah was an awesome friend so I definitely wanted to at least say hi.
“Sure but we need to be careful,” SkyBird informed.
“Yeah! I get to meet your school!” Connor shouted spontaneously. I rolled my eyes as we all climbed out of the tree. By the position the sun was in it looked to be around interventions in school.
We walked/ran to the school. When it was in sight I could feel my heart racing. Why did I feel so nervous? Ugh...more non-human instincts. We walked into the building normally. Connor was wide-eyed when seeing the inside. He looked like a kid in a candy store. It was practically making SkyBird and I laugh. “Let’s get to the high school side,” I said dragging Connor by the collar as SkyBird and I walked to our wing of the school.
Once we walked through the double doors to the high school side the freshmen (our grade) and sophomores were coming out of lunch. Everyone saw us and stopped in their tracks. Hannah, Christal, and Meghan were the only ones who came running towards us. “Hero! SkyBird!” Hannah screamed with joy as she hugged us both. I smiled as tears welled up in my eyes. Don’t worry they were happy tears.
“Who’s that?” Christal and Meghan asked eye-balling Connor.
“This is Connor. He’s part of our family,” SkyBird explained with a smile.
“Oh my god! What are THEY doing HERE?!” Alanna yelled with anger and jealousy. Oh Alanna, Alanna, Alanna. Why do you gotta be so jealous?
“Ignore her Connor. She’s just a girl who’s been jealous of SkyBird and I for about six years,” I said to Connor. Connor nodded and stuck his tongue out at her. She looked pretty pissed.
“We gotta get going. We just thought we’d drop in to say hi to everyone,” I said as I winked at SkyBird and Connor. They both smiled as we walked towards the exit in the high school side. The freshmen and the sophomores flooded out and watched in awe as we all spread our wings and soared into the blue sky.
“Hero, SkyBird. You will never be forgotten. I promise you,” Hannah said with a smile as feathers fell down from the sky.
