I slowly lifted my eyelids and looked at the clock. It read 5:54 AM. I threw the blankets over my face and groaned to myself. In about six minutes my mother was going to come in and wake up my twin sister and I. Yeah that’s right I have a twin sister/doppleganger. We look exactly alike except we’re not. Surprisingly we’re fraternal and mirror twins. When I mean mirror I don’t mean on the inside, I mean on the outside. I’m left-handed while my older sister (by three freaking minutes!) is right handed. I closed my eyes and tried to fall back asleep before I had to be waken up.

“Wake up girls! Time for school!” I heard my mother yell as she started down the stairs. I didn’t want to wake up. Didn’t. Want. To.

“You up Hero?” SkyBird asked as my eyes burst open from hearing someone. I quickly jumped to my feet and smiled. Now to get dressed. What to wear? What to wear? Hmm...I chose blue jeans, a black tank top, Ed Hardy sneakers, and an orange sweater. I would have dressed up more but I had to look casual because of...”them”. You see “them” were these people that have been watching SkyBird and I. They reminded me of the hunters Max and her flock mention a lot in the Maximum Ride series. Except Maximum Ride was just a story. This was real life. Big difference between the two.

SkyBird and I knew what the people looked like. Clothes wise. They were all male, had slicked back dark hair, dark eyes, pale skin, wore black pants, black dress shoes, white button up blouses, black coats/jackets, and black sunglasses. Now most people who heard this would probably laugh at SkyBird and I, and say we’re nut jobs. Well trust me we’re not crazy.

The bus stopped in front of our house. SkyBird and I bolted out the door just as the bus started to drive away. Great. Just great. “What are we gonna do now?!” SkyBird asked as we ran down the street, helplessly trying to catch up to our bus.

“I have an idea,” I said as I stopped running. SkyBird stopped and looked at me with a question mark face.

“What is your idea? There’s no way we can catch up to our bus or make it to school before the bell rings!” SkyBird panted, stating the obvious.

“Well why don’t we-” I started.

“NO! Absolutely not! We can’t! We might get caught! Those people that are watching us might...see,” SkyBird protested. I rolled my eyes. What’s the worst that could happen? I mean seriously our family fights a lot, there’s mean people who hate our guts in school, and we’re being tracked down and watched by some secret organization. I’m pretty sure it can’t get worse than that.

“Look. We’re not gonna make to school in time if we don’t. We can be really careful ok? You in or not?” I asked trying to keep my cool.

SkyBird thought a moment then nodded, “Fine but you promise to be really careful?”

I nodded and smiled, “Pinkie swear!” SkyBird sighed then smiled back at me. I knew what she was thinking. She wanted others to see us in our element. SkyBird wanted to show off. Really badly too.

We ended up getting to school with 15 minutes to spare. Pretty good if I do say so myself. SkyBird and I walked into the building and walked into the library. Christal, Hannah, and Meghan were all sitting and hanging around. Those were our three best and most loyal friends.

“Hey Hero and SkyBird,” Hannah greeted as she walked over to us. SkyBird smiled and said hi back. Hannah and SkyBird left to go see our old 8th grade teachers. They always did that. Some of the teachers would get angry and annoyed but Mr. Webb was always delighted to see old students. Because Hannah and SkyBird were off dilly-dallying that meant I was stuck hanging out with Christal and Meghan. They were alright except that they talked more to each other than they did to me. In simple terms I was the third wheel.

I sat down and grabbed a book. It was The Lake House by James Patterson. A good book if you like Max and the gang. I always read and reread the Maximum Ride series because I could always relate to them, in more ways than one. I heard the door to the library open, and looked up. Call me paranoid but I had to always be on alert, and for good reason too. A man with slicked back dark hair, pale skin, wearing black pants, black shoes, a white button up blouse, a black jacket, black sunglasses, and a weird ear piece (probably bluetooth) came into the library. I quietly slipped out of my seat and hid behind some bookcases. That man did not look normal and definitely not friendly. I tried to listen while hiding in case he talked to anyone.

“Excuse me who are you?” I heard Mrs. Lello say.

“I’m Mr. Peterson. I’m here with the C.S.D. Do you know where either Hero Winged or SkyBird Winged is?” the man in his fancy get up replied.

“I thought Hero was in here but it looks like she must’ve left. SkyBird’s not in here. By the way what does C.S.D. mean?” Mrs. Lello asked.

“C.S.D. stands for Children’s Safety Department. Do you mind if I check just in case?” Mr. Peterson asked with a kind smile.

“Why of course you can,” Mrs. Lello replied as she turned to her laptop and continued work. Mr. Peterson started checking between bookcases. I held my breath and tried to think of what to do. A man who was probably evil is looking for me? What options do I have?

1. run and get caught or

2. stay where I am and get caught.

          Not much for options.
